At certain points in our lives, we tend to revisit our childhoods, especially if they were good memories. The book I wrote, Peach and Plum, is based on my childhood experiences, and with Willa Cather and her novel, Sapphira and the Slave Girl, is also based on the stories she overheard and was told to as a little girl.
On the cover it says, 'A novel of jealously in pre-Civil War Virginia', and the level of pettiness that the main character, Mrs. Colbert does to set up her slave girl, Nancy, is just downright appalling.
Glad I finally took the time to read this book, since I've had in my belongings for the last 32 years.
Despite its difficult subject matter, the story is worth recommending. The characters while fictional, are based on people from Willa Cather’s own family history and also the events. This made it much more interesting to me. Despite taking place in Virginia, it was noted that many family members and neighbors were abolitionists, which rather surprised me.
