The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories by Agatha Christie

The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories is a wonderful collection that showcases Agatha Christie at her most versatile and inventive. Rather than relying on a single detective or a single style of mystery, the collection brings together a fascinating variety of stories, demonstrating just how effortlessly Christie could move between different characters, settings and forms of crime.

What makes the collection particularly enjoyable is the sheer range of mysteries on offer. There are stories of murder, deception, theft and psychological manipulation, alongside some wonderfully ingenious plots in which appearances prove to be spectacularly misleading. Christie understood that a good mystery does not necessarily need an elaborate setting; sometimes all that is required is an apparently ordinary situation and a collection of people with secrets.

The title story, “The Regatta Mystery,” is an excellent example of Christie’s ability to construct a mystery around a seemingly straightforward crime and then introduce just enough uncertainty to keep the reader guessing. As always, she is particularly good at exploiting assumptions—both those of her characters and those of the reader.

One of the pleasures of the collection is encountering some of Christie’s less frequently discussed stories. They provide an interesting contrast with the famous Poirot and Miss Marple novels and demonstrate that her talent extended far beyond her best-known detectives. Her short stories are often remarkably economical: she can establish a situation, introduce suspicion, provide a handful of carefully chosen clues and deliver a twist, all within a relatively small number of pages.

Christie’s writing is also wonderfully atmospheric. There is an unmistakable sense of time and place throughout the collection, whether the action takes place among the wealthy, in elegant country houses, on boats or in more everyday surroundings. Beneath the polished surfaces, however, there is usually something darker lurking.

Perhaps the greatest pleasure is trying to solve the mysteries alongside Christie. She is a master of the red herring, and just when you become convinced that you have spotted the solution, she has usually anticipated your conclusion and prepared another possibility.

Overall, The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories is a thoroughly enjoyable collection and an excellent reminder of Christie’s extraordinary skill as a short-story writer. It is clever, varied, atmospheric and frequently surprising.

A highly recommended collection for any Christie enthusiast—and a particularly enjoyable choice for anyone wanting to explore beyond her famous novels.

These were fun, short, mystery stories that, of course, weren't solved until the very end in true Agatha Christie fashion.
