Lee Child was born October 29th, 1954 in Coventry, England, but spent his formative years in the nearby city of Birmingham. By coincidence he won a scholarship to the same high school that JRR Tolkien had attended. He went to law school in Sheffield, England, and after part-time work in the theater he joined Granada Television in Manchester for what turned out to be an eighteen-year career as a presentation director during British TV's "golden age." During his tenure his company made Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect, and Cracker. But he was fired in 1995 at the age of 40 as a result of corporate restructuring. Always a voracious reader, he decided to see an opportunity where others might have seen a crisis and bought six dollars' worth of paper and pencils and sat down to write a book, Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series.

Killing Floor was an immediate success and launched the series which has grown in sales and impact with every new installment. The first Jack Reacher movie, based on the novel One Shot and starring Tom Cruise and Rosamund Pike, was released in December 2012.

Lee has three homes—an apartment in Manhattan, a country house in the south of France, and whatever airplane cabin he happens to be in while traveling between the two. In the US he drives a supercharged Jaguar, which was built in Jaguar's Browns Lane plant, thirty yards from the hospital in which he was born.

Lee spends his spare time reading, listening to music, and watching the Yankees, Aston Villa, or Marseilles soccer. He is married with a grown-up daughter. He is tall and slim, despite an appalling diet and a refusal to exercise.

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS
(BUT IF YOU ARE A JACK REACHER FAN, YOU MAY NOT NOTICE THEM DUE TO LOW INTELLIGENCE)

Jack Reacher runs towards danger even when he is asleep on a bus full of pensioners.

A small town of 12,000 inhabitants awaits him (without Jack knowing it — or indeed the town itself) to solve crimes, uncover corrupt cops, and beat the living shit out of major drug dealers who are 1.55 metres tall (yes, you read that correctly: Big Jack beats the shit out of a bloke who is 1.55 metres tall, because Jack Reacher).

In the middle of all this, while allowing the key witness in a very important trial to be murdered, he somehow finds the time to have a female military police officer who has taken over his old position in the 110th Special Investigations Unit fall HEAD OVER HEELS FOR HIM OVER THE PHONE — despite never having seen him — and to kill the chief of police of the small town.

Curiously, the book ends and Big Jack still hasn't "got his dick wet", but wait... what's this I see? Ahhh, TO BE CONTINUED.

In summary, for the first time we see Jack make mistakes as well (although his assistance to his telephone love interest is, naturally, flawless) and fail to unzip his trousers in honour of some goddess.

There isn't enough beating (even the midget we mentioned earlier dies rather quickly at Big Jack's hands) and, generally speaking, it seems that Child is investing in a more serious and human version of the Conan the Chessmaster that is Jack Reacher. The literary equivalent of a slightly muddy wank, ideal for the beach after 6–7 beers.

I still wonder why I keep reading the series when I have far more worthwhile books waiting on the sidelines. Perhaps because GNNNNNGGGHHH and probably because Jack Reacher.
