Alison Uttley (17 December 1884 – 7 May 1976), née Alice Jane Taylor, was a prolific British writer of over 100 books. She is now best known for her children's series about Little Grey Rabbit, and Sam Pig.
Old-fashioned nostalgic charm suffused with lyrical loveliness and set in an idealised countrified past, this is a book of short stories for reading aloud to children of any age.
The stories about Sam Pig are the delight of this collection. I particularly like Sam Pig and the Hurdy-Gurdy Man and Sam Pig and the Circus. And although there are many stories of a fantasy nature, the Russian fairytale overtones of The Little Fiddler were a highlight.
This book really is Magic, and I am now going to be searching out all the rest of her short stories. My favourite ones are little jewel-like fairytales, I’m not quite as fond of Sam Pig.
