Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is the original title of a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. The work is commonly known today as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or simply Jekyll & Hyde. It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The work is commonly associated with the rare mental condition often spuriously called "split personality", referred to in psychiatry as dissociative identity disorder, where within the same body there exists more than one distinct personality. In this case, there are two personalities within Dr Jekyll, one apparently good and the other evil. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next.
I love books. I translated them when I lived in Africa – and I worked with them when I was a teacher and a librarian, but I never thought about writing them.
One day, about ten years ago, I decided to become a full-time writer.
My first books were for younger readers. In Drake’s Drummer Boy (1998), Will sails around the world with Sir Francis Drake; in Sam Stars at Shakespeare’s Globe (2006), Sam works with William Shakespeare.
As you can see, the sixteenth century fascinates me. A few years ago, I started to write for older readers, about people who faced very tough decisions in a world that was changing quickly: Lady Jane Grey, in Raven Queen; the lost colonists in A World Away; and the young Elizabeth in Traitor’s Kiss.
What is a typical writing day? I write very early in the morning in a coffee shop. Then I use my computer to re-write and to do my research at home in my study.
I am married with two grown-up children, and I live in Hertfordshire close to London and to Cambridge. I enjoy going to the cinema and the theatre – and anywhere where I can watch other people.
The shortest story I've read so far. The copy I have has other stories as well, though it isn't listed on Goodreads. The story of Doctor Jekyll and his potion is a very interesting idea to have. How Mr. Hyde had the ability to become dominant and do the things he did is very intriguing. A quick and fun read.
This was a really good read. The story was deep, but the message was deeper. I was able to tell the plot twist from pretty early on, but the overall, the aspect of mystery grimness was still apparent. I loved the tone that the book gave off from characterization, culture, and setting. The character of Victorian Age London was grim, rigid, professional, gloomy and mysterious. I wish that Jekyll's characterization was stronger and that he gave a stronger emotional bond between the characters, making it feel like a true loss when Jekyll couldn't overcome the evil inside of him. I love this book's way of telling the story still! The message of how people cover up their evil and the ones that are honest are the ones that are honest are the ones that face demise. Everyone has good and evil inside of them and are in need of light, and he does an excellent job with carrying that symbolism through.
This book, to me, represents the ultimate story of good versus evil. A lot of stories that one reads have a good versus evil plot. The hero fights the dragon, a bully, or a corporation usually succeeding in killing the dragon, stopping the bully, or making the corporation pay. In this book, Doctor Jekyll has devised a way to separate his nature into two persons. The Psychologist, claims Jekyll has a dissociative personality disorder. Whatever you may call what Doctor Jekyll has created it appears to me to be the good in a man versus the evil in a man. This is an interesting read concerning two different sides of man's nature.
Uwielbiam wchodzić w głowę ludzi skłonnych do zbrodni, a ta książka mi to zaoferowała. Dla mnie 6/5.
such a pleasant novel to read. i had read it a long time ago, as an assignment from my literature teacher and even then, despite being 14 and having only read ya classics, i was still able to enjoy it a lot. honestly, i could never get tired of rereading this book, it's just such a nice little story, with just enough of a deep meaning not to become stale and enough action not to be boringly philosophical. also, it's one of the least hard reads ive had of books from the 1800s. it's just the perfect book tbh :)
I expected to like this more, and it's not awful but as a gothic/suspense story about addiction and crime this is actually really dull. I've had my fill of Victorian moralising and pseudo-science for a while.
Just so well written. Not your typical horror story as seen on film, but an account by his lawyer. Doctor Jekyll is portrayed as an egotist who toys with drugs to allow his sleazy side to indulge himself and hiding this side of him from his respected side of life.
