Update. I went back and read more of this book, 50 pages, and upped my star rating. I guess the main problem I have with this book is believability. I was never able to suspend my skepticism to the point of enjoying the book. I kept saying, "Oh, come on, man!" I think this book will be enjoyed by that niche of people who believe that there is a faceless army of federal bureaucrats who march in lockstep with the unions and the United Nations.
I want to make it clear that I did not read more than a dozen pages of this book, so you may wish to take my rating with a grain of salt. I don't mind political opines in books, liberal or conservative. David Weber does it well. I don't like them to be the focus of the story. It gets old quickly. The writing is very good; there were no obvious errors in spelling and grammar.
I’ve now had the pleasure of reading the entire book, The Western Front and can tell you that it is as addicting as I had suspected it would be. There are far worse ways to spend $4.99 and few better ones for several hours of great (if disturbing) entertainment.
Fueled by crushing economic times and unemployment, as well as a malevolent, violent, (Occupy Wall Street type) political organization, there are riots and food lines in major cities and urban areas throughout the United States.
Texas, nearly abandoned by the Federal Government for insisting on their state’s rights, has become a further battleground as drug cartels from Mexico have pushed the border northward a hundred miles.
Relying on their own wits, moral courage, and faith in God, a group of well-defined characters struggle to survive amidst the chaos.
If this sounds similar to James Wesley, Rawles’ Survivors, it is, but The Western Front is it’s own story and plot. A good one.
And, what do you do when forces within your own government — at the highest levels — are helping to fuel the discord and violence being suffered upon the nation? What should you do when the government lies to you?
I’m not going to give away spoilers but, this book was written recently enough to correctly extrapolate current events that are still in the news. If I didn’t have all my family living here in the Northeast, I’d be moving to the South (TX, LA, AL) in a hurry because unfortunately, it’s all too plausible.
Archer Garrett’s, The Western Front is a fine read. It’s only the first of a series and I’m looking forward to reading the rest as — you’ve guessed it — The Western Front leaves you at a precipice.
Downloaded the free book from Smashwords and took my time reading it (15 minutes a day while waiting for my son to get out of school) but couldn't wait to get to the next part. As soon as I finished book one I purchased the full books 1-3 and finished it overnight.
Archer Garrett takes you on a very plausible trip into the economic collapse of America brought on by a hidden agenda from within the government of the United States. Pitting political ideologies against each other, an unseen force sets out to destroy all things American. The characters are easy to connect with and admire, but difficult to choose a favorite, for what you're left with is rooting for America's comeback at the hands of its people.
If you're interested in dystopian fiction wrought with reality and plausible scenarios, and if you're feeling patriotic, then 'The Western Front' is for you.
“The Western Front” kicks off a series of dystopic books by Archer Garrett. In this book, Archer Garrett does a great job of laying out the America in free-fall scenario. Naturally with the ongoing economic crisis and the deepening political divide, this kind of book is becoming more popular. This one is better than most. The settings are vividly drawn and the characters are highly relatable.
This book does suffer from the same malady that plagues many small press and independently published works, not enough editing. Nonetheless the strength of Garrett's storytelling more than overcomes this. I give “The Western Front” a high grade and am moving right into the sequel, “Kratocracy.” Highly recommended.
Overall this is a very interesting look into the future of what could very well become a reality for our country! While it has its dry points to give the reader background, the action parts more than make-up for it and sometimes carry it a bit further! I look forward to reading the remainder of the series!
An Apocalypse Novel/War Exist Between the Drug Cartels and US Citizens
The Mexican Cartels have invaded South Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and during the invasion murdered every U.S. citizen along the borders. The National Guard from the 3 states have returned fire, but are out numbered and the Cartels are currently on top. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
This has potential, but clearly is not a self contained work, just a teaser for the next 2 volumes. Needs more editing too. But, a quick read and does pull you in. I might get the 3-part set sometime along the way, just to see what happens in the story.
For a book written in 2012 you would be amazed at how the scenario of this book more so than other dystopia books shows the reality of what could happen in our own lifetime, especially in light of more recent events.
I tried to like this. The action scenes are phenomenal. It was the rest of it that I didn't like. The story wasn't cohesive and I felt like I was missing connections.
