A government troubleshooter/secret agent is given an assignment to stop the expansionist dream of a certain planet.

This planet is populated by humans with faster reflexes than anyone else in the universe. It's sparsely populated, and has a totally libertarian system of government. Much like the old west, only on steroids.

Clifford croft has to stop them, despite being the slowest gun in the west.

Pretty good stuff, with a heavy handed satire on libertarian ideals.

I've had this hardback on my shelf for nearly twenty years. Finally, I got serious about attacking my to-be-read pile. I was expecting straight-ahead action/adventure sci-fi when I started reading. However, I discovered it's something more tongue-in-cheek, with a sly sense of humor similar to The Stainless Steel Rat series.

Gordon has no problem poking fun at governments and philosophies but doesn't destroy the flow of the story while doing so. The story revolves around a planet with an environment that enhances reflexes to such a point that most of the inhabitants become gunfighters and hire themselves at great profit.

Since they have such fantastic speed, they are almost impossible to defeat in a fair gunfight. This planet has no government, but very little crime because everyone carries a gun. One of the plus sides of this is that there are very few sales phone calls, because annoyed gunfighters hunt down the annoying salespeople.

A charismatic gunfighter makes a deal with a corporation, whips the population into a frenzy and starts invading other planets.
