Unique prospective on the big data analytics phenomenon for both business and IT professionals The availability of Big Data, low-cost commodity hardware and new information management and analytics software has produced a unique moment in the history of business. The convergence of these trends means that we have the capabilities required to analyze astonishing data sets quickly and cost-effectively for the first time in history. These capabilities are neither theoretical nor trivial. They represent a genuine leap forward and a clear opportunity to realize enormous gains in terms of efficiency, productivity, revenue and profitability. The Age of Big Data is here, and these are truly revolutionary times. This timely book looks at cutting-edge companies supporting an exciting new generation of business analytics.
A decent overview, but it remains advice from 24,000 feet. It boils down to: 'Big Data and Analytics - get into it!'
No "next steps" or even "first steps," just "this is the next big thing." Those looking for information beyond generic "what it is" (like, for example: "how it's done") will need to look elsewhere.
A note to business authors: if there are YouTube videos both more comprehensive and more instructive than your text, maybe reconsider your approach.
Some gems there, but the book is written in a weird way - an excessive reference to the people quoted to justify credibility. More like a transcribe from podcasts.
This book primarily aims to strengthen belief on the business value of Big-Data applications and that apparently is the only goal it achieves.
The best part of the book is the foreword written by Jim Stogdill, which is possibly one of the best forewords I have ever read for any book. Apart from that I was bit disappointed while going through its chapters because I could not find any technical depth in discussions presented therein...
It's a good introduction to big data. More focused on the managerial aspect of things. It nevertheless did a good job steering me towards great resources and books to check out of a deeper understanding .
