Maybe more a 3.5

A look at why a daily devotional life is so important. Written with a passion to learning and loving God more.

Each chapter had reflections from other well known Christians.

I found the middle to end to be a bit monotonous and repetitive. Have been pushing to get it done. Enjoyed the first part.

This book was inspiring and beautiful yet very practical as well, and I very much enjoyed it.

Nancy Leigh DeMoss explains the beauty of the relationship we are called to have with God and about how it is a privilege and not a duty. She begins with the "why", not the "how", which I appreciated, and the picture she created of wonderful intimacy with God made me want to get to the rest of the book to learn how to achieve that intimacy. It was motivational and inspiring.

In the second half of the book, she takes those inspiring words and provides a wealth of tools to be able to put them into practice. She discusses common problems to having a devotional time, how to get started, how to read the Bible, how to study the Bible and get the most out of it, how to give praise to God, and how to have a thriving prayer time. There are so many suggestions and options that everyone will be able to find something or some variation of her ideas that works for them.

The last section returns to the inspirational tone and leaves you with a last beautiful picture of the fruit regular devotions will bear in your life. After each chapter, there is a personal testimony from a woman of strong faith, as well as reflection questions that you can use to start thinking about how to apply what the book says to your own life.

I had been in a bit of a rut with my devotions and picked up this book in desperation hoping for some help. It definitely delivered, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interesting in starting a regular devotional time or in rescuing their devotional time!

Such a fantastic read! Very relatable. Very challenging. Prior to reading this book, my quiet time with God has always been a bit inconsistent. It’s so easy to get caught up in viewing it as task to check off my ‘spiritual list’, get distracted by the busyness of life or only do it when you feel like it. This book not only discusses common challenges like this, but brings it back to Biblical doctrine and emphasises why spending time in the Lord’s presence, is essential for building and maintaining a healthy relationship with God rooted in grace. This book has been a blessing in strengthening my walk with God, would definitely recommend!

Really good reminder for why prioritizing daily time in scripture is so important! I’ve already seen a consistent change in my daily quiet times even while reading through this book. Highly recommend if you’re feeling unmotivated with your bible reading or if you are simply looking for a new book to pick up during your quiet time!

This is an excellent book from one of the great Christian women of our day. I allowed myself to read this book over several months to let the practical advice become habit. I used it as a devotional/study for my own quiet time. I would love to study it with others to dig even deeper into my walk with the Lord. One practical suggestion she gave was how to read through the Bible in a year. I've tried this several times several different ways and I have to say the way she laid it out has been most helpful, I actually look forward to my daily reading. I highly recommend this study for anyone yearning for practical help in digging deeper. I down loaded it on my Kindle but I will be buying a hard copy.

I read this my jr. year of college, and it was the perfect supplement to what I had been learning about discipline and reading in the Word. It was difficult for me to discipline myself to read, because of habit or just not praying for the desire to be disciplined. But, it was very clear about the scripture that supports scriptural reading and taking time away from our ever-busy schedules to be equipped by the one thing that gives us life, breath, and the energy to live lives pleasing to the Father.

This is a great book to encourage and equip Christians in their daily devotional life. There are gems of truth in each chapter, making it a valuable resource, whether for a new Christian, a backslidden believer, or someone already faithful in a fruitful daily quiet time.

I would recommend a complete read-through, followed by using small sections consecutively in the course of one's daily devotional time.

It includes motivation for daily devotional time, suggestions on what to do and how to do it, as well as a treasure store of suggested books in the appendix

Insightful work on godly devotion. A must read for any woman who desires to know the Lord. This book is well written and sites several credible biblical scholars as well as the Bible itself. It has been an incredible encouragement to my devotional life. I highly recommend it.

Kicking off the Grace Bible Church women's mentoring group of 2020, this book has truly re-energized and transformed my spiritual journey. Never one to read books written by women specifically for women (if someone suggests praying and knitting at the same time, I tend to throw a fit - not that those two aren't both good things, but it is the normative overtone that upsets me) and also not a fan of the "grab your cup of coffee, your candle and your Bible" entreaties, I was initially skeptical of a "how to" book for a devotional life.

How surprised and delighted I was when Mrs. DeMoss offered a deep analysis of the spiritual realities of a closer walk with God in prayer and Bible reading: intimate communion with a Holy God, cleansing of thought and motivation, restoration of weariness, instruction in daily tasks, submission to hard teachings, direction for priorities, intercession for friends and transformation from the inside out. And that is just the first few chapters.

She offers many and varied practical suggestions for how to pray and how to read. She quotes Puritans freely. A smattering of poetry and song lyrics and Scriptures. Each chapter ends with discussion questions - some insightful, some tedious. Overall, this is a great book to read together in a context where discussion can spur both personal meditation and transparency. A shout out to my friend Debbie for leading our discussion.

A huge thank you to my friends Charlotte and Beth for the gift of this book! I love the story about Mary and Martha on pp.40-45; it is perfect, especially during Advent. It reminds me how important it is to strive to live like Mary in a "Martha" world. My to-do list tends to get the better of me, and I often lose sight of the true meaning of the season.

I have almost completed this book. I'm always impressed with how Nancy Leigh DeMoss is able to motivate me to discipline my time with the Lord and to crave more time with him. She is a means of grace! This is a great book to motivate you (biblically) to find your place of quiet rest at the foot of the cross through the word of God!

Nancy Leigh DeMoss shares her heart with her audience, sharing with them the blessings of a daily quiet time spent in worship and devotion to God each day. An excellent instructional read for a new Christian as well as an encouragement to the more seasoned Christian. This challenged me to bring back the intimacy to my devotions.

I would of liked it more but there are times where Nancy Leigh Demoss sort of comes across as a little rigid as how devotional time should be used. There is just way too much emphasis on when, where and how. I am more type of the person that believes that God finds people rather than God just finding them. That being said I feel like only certain parts of this devotional are meant for me.

I wish I had read this book years ago.

This is not a book of devotions. It is practical advice on how to have a daily quiet time, and more importantly, why do have a daily quiet time. I am currently rereading this book because I found so much inspiration from it!

No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, this book will be a blessing to you!

Formulas for having our quiet time only add guilt. Lets work on needing God and looking to the scriptures to fill that need of knowing who He is, whether in the morning, afternoon or evening. We can be performing a ritual and not meeting with the Master, if you get what I mean here.
