When a body is discovered next to a golf course outside of London, the case is assigned to Chief Detective Inspector Dawkins. The murdered man, and murder it is as the victim was shot several times with a small caliber pistol, is determined to be that of a one time policeman, now thought to be a blackmailer, who went by the name of Smiler Carne. Suspicion quickly falls on a retired underworld figure who is living nearby under an assumed name, but Dawkins from the beginning has his doubts. He knows that while nine hundred and ninety-nine cases out of a thousand are straight forward in their solution the thousandth case can only be solved by attention to the minutest details.
You can tell the author was a real Scotland Yard inspector from the way the case progresses but it is still interesting and compelling for all that. I really enjoyed this old mystery.
