Emma V.I.P is the second part of Sheila Hocken's story about her life with her guide dog "Emma". This edition is illustrated with many black and white photographs of the family and pets, especially Emma, on glossy paper, grouped throughout. I shall review the Large Print version for the text in due course.

This fun and interesting memoir follows from Emma And I. In this book Sheila's sight is restored and she can see her Guide Dog Emma as well as her family. She can see when food is cooked instead of testing by sticking a fork into it. She goes on TV to talk about her first book and decides to wear a dress which will make her look nice instead of making her feel more comfortable.

Emma is allowed to stay with Sheila and on one occasion revisits her role as a fog descends and Sheila cannot see her way home. This is a nice story of a loyal and loving friendship.

I enjoyed hearing what happened next for Sheila and Emma, but this seemed a lot less story like, factual, and I preferred the style of the first book.

Ez egy nagyon kedves könyv, több szempontból is.

Egyrészt, az írónő életét követjük nyomon onnantól kezdve, hogy visszanyerte a látását. Mivel ő sosem látott jól és nem emlékezett a világra, mindent meg kellett tanulnia, hogy mit is lát tulajdonképpen. Sosem gondoltam volna például, hogy ilyen esetben gondot okoz a koordináció, a lépcsők betájolása, a távolság-, mélység- és magasságérzékelés… Nagyon sok érdekes dolgot írt le ezzel kapcsolatban. Egészen más az, ha egy korábban látó ember nyeri vissza a szeme világát, mint ha egy olyan, aki sosem látott. Amit nagyon szerettem benne, hogy milyen őszinte, gyermeki lelkesedéssel fedezte fel magának a vizuális világot.

A másik imádnivaló pedig Emma. A könyv gyakorlatilag egy óda vagy szerelmi vallomás hozzá. Mi, látó emberek el sem tudjuk képzelni, milyen szoros érzelmi kötődés alakulhat ki a vakvezető kutya és gazdája között, olykor meghökkentő is… Erről gyönyörűen és részletesen ír. Őszintén szívmelengető ez a kölcsönös ragaszkodás és odafigyelés, jó volt olvasni.

This book was a sequel to a book by Hocken on life with her seeing-eye-dog, Emma. In the sequel, Hocken has regained her sight, but continues to have a special relationship with Emma. She and her family (husband and young daughter) adopt two additional dogs. What can I say--this was about dogs? It was not at all interesting, but probably would have
more appeal to 'dog people.'
