In this second edition, Dr. Hinshelwood made a thorough revision of the book in light of comments, suggestions, and critical reviews of the first edition. The result is the first comprehensive and wholly accessible exposition of Kleinian ideas.

Hinshelwood identifies the main concepts in Kleinian psychoanalysis (e.g., unconscious phantasy, anxiety, and projective identification) and their more recent developments in the works of such Kleinians as Bion, Segal, Rosefeld, and Meltzer. The Dictionary also defines Kleinian terms in a series of general entries and gives citations indicating where they appear in the secondary literature. The book concludes with a revised, comprehensive bibliography of Kleinian writings as of 1990.

Robert D Hinshelwood is Professor of Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex in England. He has written numerous books and papers on the subject of Psychoanalysis, as well as on its history, and has a particular interest in group dynamics.
