I swore I’d never love again. After my wife and son were torn from me. I threw myself into my job as the leader of a private military team and pushed everyone away.

But while on vacation in Mexico, I see an armed gang trying to drag a woman and child from their car and run to help. The woman I rescue is Lorna, a shy single mom with curves that don’t quit and the most amazing gray eyes I’ve ever seen. We have nothing in common: she’s a sophisticated New Yorker trying to raise a son on her own. I’m a big, stubborn, former Delta operator from Texas. But the attraction is red-hot and intoxicating. All I want to do is run my hands over those curves, pull her to me and kiss her hard. But she and her son remind me too much of the family I lost. As soon as I’ve got them to safety, I force myself to walk away.

But the danger isn’t over. When Lorna returns to New York, someone tries to kill her, and when she asks me to be her bodyguard, I can’t say no. Now this grumpy cowboy has to put on a suit, move into her New York penthouse, and try to fit into her fast-paced, glossy life. I need to keep my distance...but how can I, when I have to be right by her side? As I begin to fall for her and bond with her son, I want a future together...but that means letting go of my past. And all the time, the danger is mounting. The assassin is closing in, and even my whole team might not be enough to stop him.

It's no secret that Helena is one of my favorite authors.
I love hers, to the brim action-packed, stories, and I love her unbelievable gripping writing style.

This is an action-packed "thriller" romance that will have you sweating from excitement and sitting on the edge of your bed from anxious suspense.
You'll sweat for other reasons, too, but that's all a secret for you to find out 😉🔥

This book is part of a standalone series. A series about ex-militar members that are part of a secret military group for special cases.
Let's just say you don't want to be their enemy.

This book is about JD, aka John Dusty.
He was a cowboy first before he became a soldier, till tragedy struck, and his only reason to live is his military job.

Lorna is a mother and an architect.
She lives for her son and her job. That's what she loves and understands. That's what she's good at and where she can hide.

Until suddenly, her and her son's lives are threatened, and she needs help. Professional help.

This book is amazing.
It's like Mission Impossible meets Rumbo (without the jungle 😉)
It's been a long time since I've read a book in one day, but that's what the author does to me.

A perfect, slow burn, action-packed page-turner romance with a beautiful HEA 😍
A must-read for all romance lovers.

Lorna and her son were in Mexico City with her father surveying a job site. Lorna works for McBride Construction as an architect in New York alongside her CEO father Russ and brother Miles, her father's right hand man. With business taken care of, Lorna was excited to relax and enjoy Mexico. Before any relaxing could take place, their caravan was in a terrible accident. Well, it really wasn't an accident at all, it seemed to have been on purpose and her family was the intended target.
JD works for Stormfinch Security and was getting some R&R himself when he comes to Lorna's rescue and immediately he's feeling protective of her. JD hasn't felt this way about a woman since his wife. JD is a widower now. He lost his son also, and four years later, the guilt is still present.
He was definitely attracted to Lorna and Lorna to him. But his head and heart were living in the past. Lorna could be his future, but he was having a hard time getting there. He knew one thing for sure, he was going to protect this woman and her son with his life. There was never the choice to walk away. He knew what it was to lose a loved one and he deeply loved his wife and son, he would not let it happen again. Not on his watch.

OMG! PHENOMENAL READ!!  HELENA ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT!!!   ORIGINAL STORYLINE WITH LOTS OF ACTION, SUSPENSE AND SMOKING. HOT. ALPHA. OPERATORS!!! JD is a good man...a gentleman, up until he gets his hands on the shy but brilliant Lorna and became the protective, broody alpha she never wanted to live without! Sexy, emotional and unputdownable! I didn't want it to end!!!
AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!!!

I received this as an ARC reader for an honest review. I’m a little late of giving my review.

I love all of Helena Newbury books that are part of this series in some shape or form. But this is not how I expected JD book to be. I thought it would revolve around his imprisonment in Danny’s book and about the murder of his wife and son. But his imprisonment wasn’t event really mentioned, just maybe once but barely. That’s the book I was waiting for. I pictured JD as tough, strong, pained but in the beginning of the book for the first chapter he was like a teenager lusting over Lorna. Even when in danger. I feel JD needs another book about his wife and son murder especially with the flashback of his wife saying “morkret”. Like cliffhanger, what does that mean???
And in the past two books everyone was so interested in finding out what JD stands for but it was hardly mentioned and he told Lorna to quick. Like I would of liked her to work for it and the guys to ask as well.

Anyways, other than that, the storyline was good. it started with danger and ended with closure (Lorna). I like that there was no hint of how the storyline was going. It really kept you on your toes to figure out who the villain is. And loved how characters from her past books where included.
I would give this book a 3.5 stars but I’ll do a 4.

A Second Chance Family for JD

JD is the head of Stormfinch security firm and he's in Mexico for a badly needed vacation. He rescues single mom Lorna and her son, Cody then when danger threatens again, flies to New York to provide security tgere.

JD carries a great deal of guilt over the family he lost 4 years before. Lorna is sweet and shy but JD is smitten. She is pretty enraptured by the hunky Texan. I loved how math whiz-engineer-architect Lorna used her smarts.

There's plenty of action as someone had it in for Lorna and I had it wrong about the villain. JD and Lorna heat things up -- on a piano! Wow. Appearances from the Stormfinch gang are fun -- in the midst of all the danger. Enjoy the rousing finish!

A 5-star read.

Action-Packed Suspenseful

For once, we have a woman who isn’t just a damsel in distress and holds a ‘womanly’ position in some company. What stood out besides the action filled plot was this is not a damsel just waiting to be rescued. She is fiercely protective of her son and she leaves no man behind even if it means risking her current safe position.

Once a while we have different kind of woman. Here, Lorna is a math whiz, an accomplished architect and a mum, not just a pretty woman with good figure etc. Not attracting a man just coz of her beauty but coz of her personality, her actions.

The action and suspense in this book is unlike the others in the series and I definitely enjoyed that. Although I felt JD was a little distanced from his team members until almost 3/4 of the plot when he finally called for their help. I do understand his stance and his struggles.

I totally recommend checking this book and the rest in this series out. I can’t wait to read about Colton.

ARC given by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Got an email to say Helena had written a new book in the Mount Mercy series and was sooooo excited to receive my ARC. Just love this authors talent - love story and action movie on a page. Its drama right from the first page and wonderfully written, has a happy ending but it’s not all plain sailing and hearts and flowers. JD comes to the rescue of an attempted kidnapping whilst in a bar on down time. He saves a woman and young boy in the rescue and the story unfolds of attempted murder, death, destruction and betrayal. The team are called into help JD protect Lorna and Cody in New York. Great to read more of the team and the tight bond they have. Lots of twists and turns as to be expected by this author. Another great book in the series and only feel disappointed that we have to wait for the next book in the series - Colton….cant wait.

Great read

This was a good read, a romantic suspense. This book touched me in a way I wasn’t expecting. I really like her characters and how you see them grow and heal. That’s magical. The only thing I found tiring was the crazy sexual chemistry that stopped the characters from thinking all the time. However, the spice is hot and the love between the couple and the other couples from past series throughout the story is lovely. The suspense is non stop which is great. I do like Helena Newbury and really liked her other series reason why I had to try this one. She keeps you entertained and you are hooked until you know what will happen next.

JD is just realizing that his friends and teammates at Stormfinch Security may have been right when they convinced him he needed this vacation in warm, sunny Mexico. When he witnesses a woman and child being forced at gunpoint from the back of their vehicle, he does what comes naturally and steps in to prevent their kidnapping. Weeks have passed and JD is in New Youk where he witnesses an attempt on Lorna’s life, the same woman he saved in Mexico. She asks him to stay there as her bodyguard until they can find out who wants her dead. He lost his wife and child several years ago and swore he would never love again, but Lorna and her son will have him questioning that vow.
I loved all the characters; they are compelling and very well written. I thought Lorna and JD were particularly fascinating though. Their relationship is especially riveting because JD swore to never love another woman, while Lorna was devastated when she found out her ex only married her for her money and her already low self-esteem took a major hit. I thought their struggle to trust their own feelings, and each other's declarations of love very realistic. Exciting, action packed, and steamy romantic suspense with surprising and unexpected twists in the plot which kept me glued to the pages of this must read, fantastic book. I highly recommend this book to other readers.

A thrilling emotional ride with twists and turns.

This story starts out with a bang (no pun intended) and will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire book. Helena Newbury has a way of telling a thrilling story while making you suspect every person as the villain, only to create twists and turns that will keep you guessing, are they, or aren’t they? JD Taggart meets Lorna MacBride by chance and rescues her and her son, Cody, from an attempted kidnapping. They have an immediate connection and pull to one another. While JD fights his attraction to her, he can’t resist the need to protect her, and Cody from harm. I was waiting for JD’s story and for him to be able to push through his grief of the loss of his wife and son and have his own HEA. I’m so glad it was someone like Lorna who was different from him yet complimented him perfectly. JD’s relationship with Cody was heartwarming and at the same time a bit heartbreaking as he thinks of his own son.

This series has been full of passion and angst as each man of Stormfinch overcomes their own internal barriers so they can love and be loved. Surrounded by an intense and suspenseful story that captivates you from the beginning and keeps you holding your breath with every twist and turn; you won’t be able to put this down until the end. I read well into the night to finish it. I’m looking forward to the next Stormfinch member finding love! Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book in return for my honest review.

GUARDED by Helena Newbury is my latest book I've read by Helena Newbury. I have been a fan of her books ever since I read Alaska Wild. Her books are action packed, with romantic suspense, and a couple that you can't help but want them to have a Happy Ending.

Lorna McBride was in a lot of danger in Mexico when she first met her hero, JD. Lorna couldn't understand why anyone would do her or her son harm. Nobody had ever tried to kill her before. She felt she was a single mom. An architect. A no one. A nobody. She didn't take into account her family were worth Billions. Her father and brother were the outgoing, charismatic, charming members of the family. She was the shy, brilliant designer of their tall building success, and worthy of a lot more credit than she realized. Her father liked how JD had rescued his family and he wanted him to come be her bodyguard. He had lost his wife and child while he was deployed and couldn't stand a thought of Lorna and her son meeting the same ill fate. He still lived with guilt that he wasn't there when his wife and son were both killed. He'd do everything he could to keep Lorna and her son Cody safe from danger. None of them knew just how much danger they were up against.

As soon as Helena Newbury has a new book, I jump right on it! They never disappoint.

This one for me was one of the most fun to read in terms of working out who dun it. I was bamboozled by the red herring, fully convinced it was them, to have my second guess be right but then another plot twist thrown in at the end! *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼💋

I love the romance action genre as it allows for some sweet scenes, an interesting story line and also a huge “who did this to you” vibe and this point didn’t disappoint.
Even tho JD had a lot to work through, the “touch her and I kill you vibes” were there from the start and it just makes me 🫠🫠

Helena always writes such great, strong female characters and Lorna was no exception to this. I loved reading about her character and how she stayed tough through everything.

Getting to watch all the side characters & couples grow too is so fun and I already can’t wait for the next book!

I really love this series and this one did not let me down. I have loved JD throughout the series and I have been so excited for his HEA. I absolutely loved it.

JD lost his wife and child years ago when he was in the military and he has never gotten over it. When he is in the right place at the wrong time and has to save Lorna and her son from an attempted kidnapping, he is drawn to her in a way that he hasn’t been since his wife.

This book had a lot of danger and intrigue. Helena Newbury is one of those authors that I can’t predict how her books are going to end and I love that! I can not get enough of her writing and I just want more. I feel like I need to reread all of the books of hers that I have read.

I really loved JD. His story was so heartbreaking and I loved that we got to see how he worked through his grief and how he finally let Lorna and her son into his heart. I could not get enough of this couple. I loved that Lorna really came out of her shell and gained confidence in herself throughout the book.

I loved this couple and I could not get enough. I would absolutely read this book again and I can not wait for the next book in the series!

The Architect and the Cowboy

Former Delta operator and head of security operations company JD happened to see a horrendous attack on two official looking SUVs, and even unarmed was more than up to the task of assisting and making a rescue.

Lorna was just an architect and out of her element already because her father insisted she start making speeches and doing presentations for the company he owned. Suddenly they were under attack and her ten year old son was in the car and all she could think about was how to keep him safe and not leave him an orphan. Just as she was being dragged away a handsome rock of a man annihilated her attackers and pulled her to safety.

There’s heat between them from the get-go, but JD always holds himself back from Lorna. There’s still too much pain in his heart from the wife and child he lost years ago. Yet there’s someone out to harm Lorna and her son Cole and he can’t deny the pull they have on his heart.

This is a pretty good knight in shining armor story, with the knight a little in need of rescue himself. Very interesting tale with a twist and great supporting characters.

ARC Reader here giving a review. Helena is one of my favorite authors and I’ve read a lot of her books. I love how action packed they are and Guarded is more of that same action I love. With JD’s past and how he feels about moving on from his deceased family I actually expected more angst around that with his relationship with Lorna but I’m so glad that was kept to a minimum, I hate drawn out angst, so if you are the same, no worries here! This book had great twist and turns with the plot which I also really enjoyed. I am left wondering about JD’s wife’s last word before she passed away and wishes there was a little more on that, maybe something in epilogue that hinted his family’s murders is going to be solved, as it was mentioned then moved on from. Will we find out more? I have to believe so or why mention it? I think Helena has something up her sleeve there! Looking forward to the next book and how the love interest is going to feel about that bear cub!

I absolutely loved this book, couldn't put it down, it has everything, romance, suspense, and so many twists and turns. I had figured out who quite early on, but the how and why I had no clue, till the twist at the end, and what a brilliant twist.

This is JD and Lorna's book, but it was great to see all the others in the team and their spouses part of it, gives you an update on what is going on with all of them.

With Lorna's life in danger, she asks JD to be her bodyguard, at first he thinks he can do it alone but as things get worse he has to call the team in to help. It is hurting JD as he starts to have feelings for her and her son, but he has to put his past to bed first and put her life first to keep her safe.

This is a standalone but I would highly recommend reading Helena's other books as in part they are all connected, and every one of them has a brilliant storyline. I have loved every book Helena has written and they are all amazing.

JD. and Lorna and Cody!

Another great story, pace is fast and you really hate to put it down after you get in the thick of the story.I was really surprised b that it was Paige you was behind every thing that was happening to Lorna and Cody,Russ and even Miles.i first thought it was Paige but then I thought it couldn't be and thing maybe maybe it was the guy that was holding purse strings with the banks, but I very quickly enameled him because he was nearly killed with Lorna and I ruled out Miles at the beginning of the story because you could tell he had a problem withe drugs. This problems that was happening in Lorna 's life at least open her up and gave her confidence, plus it made JD work on his problems too. Both were there for each other and c at the end all three became a family and a team family too! Please read this story, you won't be disappointed, it has alot of ups and downs, good and bads but a happy ending!

While on vacation in Mexico, JD sees armed men trying to drag a woman and child from their car and he leaps into action to save them. Once Lorna and her son, Cody, are safe, despite his attraction to her, he reluctantly walks away. Out of sight does not mean out of mind, however, and when Lorna is attacked again in New York City, nothing will keep him away. Whoever is trying to kill Lorna will have to go through him first.

The title fits in more ways than one. Not only is JD guarding Lorna, he's guarding his heart, but that last one is a losing battle. JD and Lorna are brimming with sexual tension in this electrifying romantic suspense thriller. The action is pretty much non-stop in this well-plotted stellar addition to the Stormfinch Security series. I loved it.

Guarded by Helena Newbury is the latest release in the Stormfinch Security series with JD’s, the team leader, story. This read is romantic suspense at its best with the action packed twists and turns and unexpected events that are happening to keep us on the edge of our seats. JD is a man that has not moved on from past events in his life and is not letting himself actually live his present life. Meanwhile Lorna is a woman that little confidence based on past events in her life. But when these two meet under the most unusual circumstances sparks seem to fly for both JD and Lorna. And their story is one that will pull you as we learn about both of them and secrets are revealed. Plus there is Cody who will just keep a smile on your face. I am loving this series and each of the team members and their stories.

I get so frustrated with Helana books. I love the characters she portrays. Strong Alpha males but I always feel a huge let down, that they don't live up to what she is trying to make them. I feel they are all talk and no bite. Spoiler they are all meant to be professionals in there own areas yet they get taken off guard and no one actually stops a situation happening.

Like someone grabs the Heroines arm and JD is just like let go, i mean any proper protector would put himself between them but no he stands there saying let go.... Helena needs to read some Caitlyn O'Leary books to show how Alphas would act.

Its just so frustrating because the men are great the stories are usually great sadly they are just all talk and as i said its just frustrating. If your not going to give the Alpha men bite don't write this type of genre.

Lorna is an architect. She, along with her father and son are in Mexico when they are attacked by a masked group of assailants. JT, former military, and Stormfinch Security Member is nearby and saves Lorna and her son and immediately feels protective of the two. JT has not felt this way about anyone since he lost his wife and son and is overwhelmed by the guilt he feels over this surge of attraction. He is struggling with these feelings and the need to protect them as threats increase.
This book is action-packed and suspenseful with a great plot. It has lots of emotion and chemistry and well written characters. I enjoyed the updates on the characters from the related books as well. I absolutely recommend this book and others in this series. I feel you can read them in any order. I am looking forward to the next book, Colton's story.

I just discovered Helena Newbury and I am so delighted that I did. I was utterly captivated by her characters and her stories. The suspense, action, intrigue and romance were exceptional. The danger put me on the edge of my seat. JD Taggert and Lorna McBride were top notch characters. He's a cowboy, former Delta Force, Stormfinch Security Leader and a widower. He's never gotten over or moved on from losing his family. That is, until he rescues Lorna from an attempted kidnappers. Lorna is a world class architect, single mother and devoted daughter. Her self esteem is not the best but having JD in her life just may change that. But first, someone's trying to takeover her father's company by trying to kill her. Not on JD's watch. Ultimately, the Stormfinch team comes in to help JD vanquish a surprising enemy. I am definitely going to binge on Ms Newbury's catalog.

This one is a tear-jerker, heart-pounder, and swoony mix that has all the feels. If you have read previous books by Helena you may remember that JD lost his wife and young son and has been closed off ever since. His vacation in Mexico, and enjoyment of a cold margarita is interrupted by an attempted kidnapping that was playing out right in front of him. Oh, hell no. These guys were not going to grab a woman while he sat and watched. One tequila bottle later he was looking down at the most perfect woman he'd ever seen. Lorna is a shy, brilliant architect who has never felt desirable, not even when she was married. Now, she concentrates on her son and her profession and leaves the flashy speeches and handshaking to her father and brother. But her entire world is about to collapse all around her and she will find herself depending on a tall, quiet Texan with relationship issues to keep her and her son safe from an unknown person who seems determined to kill her.

The whole team will end up involved in JD's fight to save Lorna from whoever is targeting her. As he continues to fight his feelings for her, he wonders if simply saving her is all he wants to do. Could his heart finally be healing? I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Loved every second of this read! There's suspense, intense moments that had the heart pounding, sadness, heart twisting, and a connection that is sparked early on, that burns slow, but builds up as the pages turn. Lorna and JD click, the time spent together builds on that very well. The story flows, throws twists and turns, and had my jaw dropping. My heart ached for both JD and Lorna, learning about their lives, the ups and downs, and how they handle those things. The characters are strong, the bond that JD and his friends have can't be broken, and I love a story that can bring them all together so well. This is a series that I've been pulled into, and a must read!

Another Great Read

Another great book in The Stormfinch Security universe.
As usual Helena has outdone herself JD and Lorna’s story. What was not to like, it was action packed from the beginning. There was the intense attraction that started in Mexico and ignited in New York. And the twist of the villain that I did not see coming. It was good to see the team in action together again.
Glad JD had a second chance at love and a family. A terrific ending back at Mount Mercy for the entire team and their women.
I look forward to Colton story.

This book is in the Stormfinch Security series and can be read as a stand alone. This story is about JD who meets Lorna while on vacation in Mexico. Lorna is an architect and not at all confident in herself and personal life. When JD saves her and her son from kidnappers he basically becomes her bodyguard. She has feelings for him but he has trouble getting past the death of his wife and son. This book was really intense and full of suspense which kept me reading it well into the night. I highly recommend reading this! I received an advance copy from the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Lorna is an architect for her dad’s construction company. When they’re on a work trip to Mexico she’s put in danger and is saved by JD. JD happens to work at a security firm and is well versed in combat. Lorna’s dad invites him to New York to visit and they’re once again thrown into a dangerous situation. All of a sudden Lorna is thrown into running his business which is not her comfort zone.
JD has a tragic past and is trying hard to fight his growing feelings for Lorna and her son. When he finds she’s in danger he can’t help but protect her.
Non stop action. Loved how it all came together. I thought I knew what would happen, but I was wrong. Excellent read.

Unfortunately I just couldn't get into this book, the characters were unbelievable from the start as was the random attempted kidnapping in mexico, and although I know the lead characters were meant to have their issues, the author just kept pointing out how fat, awkward and lacking confidence the female lead Lorna was, that it just made it too unbelievable that a fit, ex military, texan cowboy like JD would be so taken by her. I know looks aren't everything, but the author spent too much time belittling Lorna , turning me off to her completely, that I really just couldn't be bothered to read anymore.

Brilliant

I have read this story before but it is still as brilliant the second time around JD leads the group of people who make up Stormfinch Security each person unique in their own way each with their own particular skill set. JD lost his wife and son when they were murdered while he was away on a mission when he was in the special forces he closed himself off not believing he could find love again until Lorna McBride barrelled into his life when she and her son needed saving. Theirs is a wonderful love story in the midst of an action packed thriller. A brilliant read with never a dull moment and lots of poignant moments.

I love how protective JD is with Lorna and Cody. What breaks my heart is he thinks caring for them is like cheating on his late wife and son. I loved when he finally realizes it’s not.
Lorna is so strong but sometimes thinks she’s not. She’s a great mom to Cody and loves her family fiercely. She can’t figure out who is trying to kill her because she doesn’t have any enemies, or so she thought.
This story is full of suspense which I love. A definite page turner.
Love how the whole team comes to help JD and Lorna take down the enemy.
I highly recommend this book and the series.

Loved this!

Helena Newbury is an excellent author. One of my favorites! She writes well with exciting storylines and complicated characters. JD and Lorna are immediately attracted to one another, but have a slow burn romance. LOVED IT! Add suspense and some steam, and I was invested. I loved JD's manliness. He was so real. Lorna had my heart from the start. She's a single mom with an adorable son, plus sized and unsure of herself in social situations. Seeing previous characters adds so much to the story. I cannot wait for the next book!
