A great classic by Mr.Kipling and a story I'd recommend for children, though people of all ages would enjoy the read. The story is about Harvey, a spoilt rich kid who falls overboard his ship and is rescued by a fishing boat. Without his money and the power of living in his rich father's shadow, Harvey has to earn his worth like everyone else. In this short read, you follow a young man's journey into manhood, about family and courage.

It's another solid story from Rudyard Kipling, and the illustrations in this abridged, children's version are enjoyable. I appreciate how the author simply relates an engrossing tale from which naturally emerge helpful life lessons in humility, hard work and fidelity.

4 stars from me, 4 1/2 from my seven year old. We’re both confused why Mr. Cheyne never told his life story to his own wife.

Personal Response: I think that the author did a great job changing the main characters throughout the book. The book did get a little long, but I read it anyway. Rudyard Kipling did a great job making me feel like I was in the book. I do think that some parts were dragged out to long.

Plot Summary: Harvey, the main character, is a rich and spoiled child. He is on one of his father's ships. Harvey goes overboard, and he cannot manage to get back on the ship. He is picked up by a fishing boat. Harvey becomes a fisherman on the We're Here. He spends time with the men who saved his life, and Harvey becomes more respectful to them. When Harvey finally makes it back to his parents, he has become a respectful man. Harvey then manages to get not only him but his friend a job, working on his father's ships.

Recommendation: I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Mainly because the characters are on a ship the whole time. The book has a lot of information about fishing and the sea. So if you enjoy either of those two things this book is great.

Characterization. Harvey starts as a spoiled child. He becomes humble when he is rescued by his ship mates. Through out the book he works very hard on the ship. In the end he shows that he is a real man.

The book is very nicely written for children readers. The most focus is on the humanity and the behavior of people. Not much focused on the technical details (which is obvious for children). Otherwise, the book is very nicely written a must read for children who loves adventure. It also gives a moral lesson of being simple and not boast about money always. It is always hard to earn money, you can understand when you yourself earn it.

My 11 year old son and I read this together. I do love The Great Illustrated Classics series, because they are a “Cliff’s Notes” version of great works of literature.

For unmotivated, young readers, these books are better tasting medicine, with pictures, shorter chapters, and more readable text.

We have a collection of The Great Illustrated Classics, and I occasionally pick up more additions from thrift stores.

Read this with my son for his assigned book report. We enjoyed discussing our favorite parts and researching the author. Most enjoyed the action at sea - so vividly described. Great read with a good lesson in kindness and growth. Harvey grew into a man through his experiences with the “We’re Here” bunch.

It was a great book about a rich brat who is turned into a kind fisherman in only months. I think you should read this book if you like books that are a little scary. There are some good parts where I couldn't get my hands off this book. This is a good book for teens.

I read this as a proofreading endeavor, but now I may have to read the original because the story seems to be decent. I could detect elements that I am sure Rudyard Kipling developed quite nicely. Entertaining little read.

My first GIC book that I read and I can't wait to read more. We actually saw the movie first (from the 30s) and I had no idea it was based on a book. Not sure about the original story, but the adaptation was just perfect. And definitely not super watered down--there are some adult themes in here (especially the dead body, that was a shock!) My son loved it. The movie with Spencer Tracy is wonderful...catch it if you haven't seen it.

Captains Courageous itself was fine, but I feel that the way it was adapted leaves room for improvement. Clearly it does not invoke suspense at times in the story when it should.

Captain Courageous is a book about a boy, named Harvey, who changes throughout the book and learns many new skills and uses them throughout the book. I like this book because of how it represented many changes throughout the story that seemed pleasing to know a snotty boy like Harvey at first, turned out to be who he is in the end. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 because it shows attributes to a good book. It was very enjoyable to read presenting many journeys and adventures throughout the story that excite the reader and provide a cliffhanging story that would keep you wanting to keep on reading. I would definitely recommend this to anyone willing to read it.
I personally enjoyed this book as it provided with a good story and an entertaining story that I believe new readers would enjoy to start reading because of it having many pictures and also a simple to follow to story-line. The story line is very basic and shouldnt confuse the reader because it isn't complicated and doesn't have any twists or confusing turns in it. I loved the book because it was an easy read and explained a good lesson and also what could result from your actions. This is an amazing story that goes into deep detail about the character and also does not introduce any new characters once the main characters are listed and set, but their are few exceptions. Thanks for reading my review on Captain Courageous.

A standard coming of age story that happens largely on a fishing vessel. Maybe it was original when written, but no modern reader will find anything new here.

Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling was a very adventurous and action packed novel. The main character is a young man named Harvey Cheyne. He belongs to a multimillionaire family, he goes on a cruise with his family and he falls overboard! While adrift he gets rescued by a man named Jack. Jack belongs to a crew of fishers that ride on a fishing vessel called the were here. Once harvey is aboard he demands to be taken back to his home immediately, but the crew won’t do it. The captain of the vessel who is called captain troop tried to teach him a lesson but harvey wouldn’t have it. After being on the ship for awhile he learned fishing tricks and all sorts of things. Then He finally sends out a telegram to his parents and they meet of and a dock for a grand fishing meet. Then happily being reunited with his family he decided he wanted a fishing life so went back out to sea. I really liked this book because there was a lot of fun parts and even some scary parts too, there were surprisingly no parts in the book that got sorta boring. The book was always filled with fun content and reading more books like it would be wonderful! The theme for this book would probably be don’t think twice because when harvey got on the boat he hated it and wanted to go home but after awhile he learned to love the boat and its crew
