Dangerous Dan by Jim Hodgson

Science fiction and sarcasm had a baby. Here it is.

Dan McNamara's not a hero, but he was heroic once. He's almost not even a cop anymore.

Sure, he's fallen on some hard times but the jokes haven't changed, have they?

The good news is he's gotten a clue that might just lead him tocrack the case of his wife's unexplained disappearance. He might be able to claw out of the mess things have become. And if he has to save Earth in the process, well, that's a bonus.

He'll have to stay on his toes, on his game, and off the booze or things could go sideways.

After all, they don't call him "Dangerous" for nothing ... as far as you know.

Dangerous Dan is such a great book! It's dramatically and refreshingly different from every single other Dystopian Future fiction in several ways.
First, most authors do a great job of making me want to barf from so much shocking revelation, fast paced action, and suspense, but their attempts at humor are cringe-worthy, sometimes even embarrassing to me. Not this book. I laughed until I cried. Over and over again. Dan is a funny, ridiculous, smart and awkward human character, some situations are funny, and other characters' responses are funny! Anyway I laughed a lot.
Its next striking difference was that I actually have had many of the emotions Dan has, maybe not the situations, but certainly feeling too fat for my clothes, missing a loved one, and awkward either from doing or saying something stupid or situational awkwardness. I can laugh at Dan, and then say, 'Aww, poor Dan.' Call me crazy, but I never said that, not even once about Katniss or Triss and maybe only once or twice about Hig, and I say that several times a day on any given day. I connected with the characters of this book in a way that other authors have tried to make me do but have never succeeded.
But perhaps the most remarkable difference was that a great deal happened in this book, everything was beautifully described, journeys were started, and then... THEY WERE FINISHED! The author neatly wrapped up the story in less than 230 pages! Ugg, I want to say more, but I'm zipping my lips now. I don't know if anyone ever reads these things, but if they do, I don't want to give anything away. Anyway, I'm so glad I read this book. I'm so glad this book was written so I COULD read it. i want everyone who loves books to read it and people who think they hate books to read it too, because it will change their minds and consequently, their lives.

Dangerous Dan

A really fun read, fairly rockets forward hardly giving our eponymous hero the chance to catch his breath or down a beer. Three years previous to the start of this story after an apparently truncated and aborted invasion by beings know as the Scourge, Dan’s wife disappeared in mysterious circumstances, this sets Dan on a self destructive path of depression and borderline alcoholism.
Upon discovering that Marina, his wife, is still alive Dan determines to rescue her. In this endeavour he is aided by Estrella, his former partner at Central Crimes and his missing wife’s sister, along with Santos his former protege now a senior officer, Childers the epitome of a tech geek genius and Zunder who may or may not be human.
When the Scourge return all hell breaks loose and a fast paced rollicking adventure ensues.

Different take on Sci-fi

Different take on Sci-fi. The loss of his wife has led to the failing of Dangerous Dan. He is no longer a trim, fit police detective. He is fat, alcoholic and has nothing but the belief that he can find out what happened to his wife.

Fun but... Too much time spent on humor of washed up, overweight, clumsy sadsack type, used-to-be hero. Not enough plot.

Dangerous Dan is great

I loved I! It has everything I like. Good plot twists, a hero who is not perfect and aliens. What’s not to like?
