Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle meets Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name in this story about a girl who must save the boy she loves from a fate that has already happened .
Soon-to-be high school graduate Dante is special. He can rewind time and sense impending rips in the universe, and he uses his powers to help the extra-dimensional creatures (XDs) that fall from these rips before they’re caught by the notorious Bouvard family.
But two months later, Dante is dead.
Mei June mourns him as she braces herself for a summer of working in her family’s shop before heading to college. She should be busy with her father’s impossible standards, a mentally ailing grandmother, and a future to prepare for…
But it’s hard to move on when your dead boyfriend keeps texting you.
With no answers and only a vague understanding of Dante’s duties, Mei June tries to find a way to help the XDs—and maybe save Dante.
Split in two narratives told two months apart, THREADS FROM THE FUTURE is a time-bending story of love, loss, and the dangerous power of hope .
Definitely 3.5! I just wanted more. Following Mei June and her loss while learning about the dimensions and how all the characters will tie in will be great!
I received an ARC for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily all thoughts/opinions above are my own(:
I'll be upfront with this. I am on Jennifer's mailing list and through it received this book as an (ARC) Advanced Reader Copy.
The blurb, the first of five books, hints at time-bending, alternative dimensions, and a sinister group. The prologue adds some tantalising intrigue that makes me want to read more.
All of this created an expectation which I would like to say developed into a fantastic read. But for me, the first book didn't deliver.
This book has some great strengths. The main characters are well-written and emotionally engaging. Locations and secondary characters, who are a part of Mei June's (MJ) normal life, combine well; and the sense of loss MJ experiences over Dante's death and her reaction to suddenly getting messages from him are palpable.
Yet, while I love a good hook leading me to the next book, the one you're reading should itself have a complete story. Using two perspectives set two months apart should have concluded the story created in the prologue. But there's a conspicuous void between chapter One and the prologue's foreshadowing, leaving me unsatisfied.

The Universe was a complex tapestry in which diverse and varied forces were tangled. Sometimes the threads of the tapestry got tangled or broke...
That day, at the intersection of Salisbury and Kent, a terrible event was brewing. The driver and passenger of the Toyota Yaris were driving, unaware of the danger...

I was gradually completely carried away in a mysterious and extraordinary reading, filled with twists and turns. I loved the plot and the characters!
At the end of this volume 1, I now literally burn to know the rest! What will happen now??? 😲
Thank you Jennifer San Filippo for an ARC copy of Threads from the Future!
We meet our main characters on the worst day of their young lives, car accident with a drunk driver. Dante is gone, and Mei June is left to wade through the grief such a heavy loss brings... until the fateful day 2 months after his passing, Mei Jun receives a text from none other than Dante. How is this possible? Can she save him?
This time bending dual POV had me hooked from the beginning! I found this to be a fun coming of age story, our main characters are reaching the end of high school and grappling with "what's next?" and what to do with the INSANE knowledge of these tears in the universe!. The author also did an excellent job describing differing family dynamics between the main and side characters as well as how fickle high school relationships can be.
For being a short book so much action, adventure and mystery was packed in. I am very excited to continue this series!
Threads from the Future is an intriguing read. If anything, too much is left to the imagination or to be learned in further installments of this series. I was definitely left with the desire to learn more about this interaction of dimensions and the characters involved. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement as the series progresses. Not being perfect doesn't make it a bad book. I still enjoyed the experience of reading Book 1.
I received an advance copy from the author and leave my voluntary review.
Very interesting book. Unique and like I have never read before. The writing so beautiful .I think a person with good vocabulary would immensely love this book. It has a very good plot, the characters developed well and twists and turns were amazing! Highly recommended!!!
The characters and world building were wonderful. Definitely would have loved to see more but all the interesting information and the main characters loss was intriguing. Can't wait to see what you write next!
This was a real good book I was able to grab an arc copy and I would love to read more it was packed with a lot and such a page turner not knowing what your gonna learn next will be looking for more by this author
I really enjoyed this book! So many things are going on at once, and you can't wait to put all the pieces together. Definitely a page turner, and I can't wait to read the next one!
I read another of this author's many series' and this book was just as amazing as I found the others to be.
Jennifer San Filippo has a strong ability to create unique characters with different traits and personalities. They all made me feel like I NEED to continue reading the book. The well-written connection I felt with the characters made me love them.
The plot was one of the most unique things I have read about. I love the mystery of why Mei June is being put into the middle of the danger. I can't wait to see more of the story through Mei and Dante, and hopefully more characters.
A quick pace, action filled, mystery-esque, time traveling book for youths and young adults. I enjoyed the way the chapters were set up, both jumping between time and characters. This book is book 1 of the series & leaves readers excited to dive straight into book 2.
I found this book to be a perfect fit for anyone between middle school and young adult, which I personally feel like can be a hard age group to please.
The conclusion of the book shocked me and hit me completely unexpected, while also leaving me excited to see where Mei June and (especially) Dante and Boid will end up next.
Who says we’re the only sentient beings in the universes? I grew up on Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, et al so really enjoyed the premise for this time/portal travel adventure.
I appreciated how the author had the school handle Dante’s death. At least that there was some mention of it, a gathering, and the availability of counseling for the teens. We should remember the deceased as they were; share their quirks and eccentricities – that’s what makes us each a unique person.
Words from the wise: ‘The future’s a funny thing … it doesn’t like to be pinned down.’
Let’s see what the future has in store for us in ‘Souls amid the Ether’.
