In this second full-length Mildred Budge novel, the retired school teacher gets physical. By temperament a contemplative, in this story Mildred bravely leads the way to safety after the pulpit committee with whom she is traveling in an old-fashioned Buick flies off an embankment. Not only does Mildred discover in herself reservoirs of physical strength, but she also experiences new spiritual adventures as she continues to “work out her salvation” within the context of friendships and church relationships.Mildred Budge in Embankment challenges men and women to reconsider the tensions between grace and human will while experiencing glimpses of heaven along the way. It is perceptive, funny, and uplifting. Readers will enjoy the journey with Mildred and her friends. If you enjoy a wholesome story that explores the mysteries of grace and being human, you will enjoy Mildred Budge in Embankment.
I've been deep in the community of Cloverdale with Mildred Budge. She is a spectacular character as are her many friends. I read the first book straight through the night. I took a couple days on book two because I was busy. It felt like the characters were real. I'm happy there is a series although each book could stand along. There's never a dull moment. I read these on Kindle but feel the need to purchase a hard copy. Sometimes I feel I'm overwhelmed with so much going on - like 3 funerals this past week and much busy work. Mildred in the books knew to have quiet time and reflect on eternity. She felt joy. The first two books are about a community of characters in a church and their interactions. The first two books are just wonderful. I'd recommend everyone taking a visit with Mildred and her friends.
I’ve enjoyed the two books about Mildred Budge more than I can express. At first, I thought they were humorous and light but the more I read and reflected I realized the depth they truly had to share. These two books have altered the way I view my spirituality. I feel more thoughtful of my friendships and appreciative of my Southern and Church heritage. I am planning to send a set to my friends as gifts.
This second story about Mildred Budge centers around the events related to her work on the new pastor committee and the results of the car accident involving that committee along the way. Characters continue from the first story, problems occur for Mildred and her friends, and Mildred leans strongly on her faith to 'move on.' Hate to leave this group of familiar friends and strong Christians until we meet again.
I have already read book 1 and it was as delightful as this one. Each character is so unique, yet each reminds you of a friend of yours. I want a book 3!!! Surely there is one or will be. I love hearing the thoughts of Mildred. She is so real. Books I could not put down. Such sweet reminders of " Jesus Saves." Not preaching it, but living it. Not perfect, but faithful. You will enjoy!
Second of the Daphne Simpkins books I have read, this is as warm and inviting as the first. This book is much more than a trivial account of a Southern "Church Lady." This is a humorous and kind homage to the struggles and triumphs human beings encounter as they continue to grow and change with age. Inspiring in a way that ultimately has very little to do with whatever particular faith path one has undertaken.
And I very much enjoy Simpkins' writing style. Each character is unique and interesting, situations believable but unique as well! But what I love and appreciate the most are Mildred's inner workings of faith that let you know Simpkins' writes from an intimate, real and true relationship with the One who loves. More please!
This is my favorite of the Mildred Budge series, which I love. The interactions between Mildred and Jake are delicious and beautifully handled. Her friendship with Fran is bracing and forms a nice running commentary on Mildred's life. Each key character is lovingly given an important role in the plot. Recommended with 5 🌟 stars.
I’ll be sad when I’m done with this series… I love how Mildred is so deeply sincere in her faith and lets the spirit work in her to overcome any area she may need a bit of work. We all need this time with our savior to constantly become more like Him. Good story. Characters are very believable
I read this book immediately after finishing Mildred Budge in Cloverdale, simply because I couldn’t resist! The book starts quite differently than the prior book, and delves a bit deeper into the types of personalities that exist in most local churches. It’s full of humor, but also full of depth and insight. The emphasis on living out Christ’s love within a church body is developed so that it challenges your heart and mind. I didn’t want this book to end! And I don’t think I’ve ever read a book in which I wanted to meet the protagonist so much. There is much to think about in this book, and I’ve learned a lot about people—and what makes them tick—by looking at life through Mildred Budge’s eyes.
I love Mildred Budge. She is a lovely blend of Godly wisdom, good friend and sincere Christian. I would like to have her as a neighbor. The other characters are also vibrant and endearing. The story line is good and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I’m not sure why, but I find Mildred fascinating. The Mildred books are more churchy than Fanny Flagg’s Southern ladies, but as in Just Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, there’s never a doubt of sincerity in the religiosity. They are good stories about human foibles and potential for change and grace.
Is a lovely older woman who is getting younger! She is getting a baby to help Janie until she gets out of prison and is in business with Fran. Can’t wait for the next book.
In the style of the Mitford series, Mildred Budge lives and loves her friends, neighbors, and church. A thoughtful peek into the hearts and minds of the faithful.
As a fan of Jan Karon’s Mitford series I love these Mildred Budge books. No big plot, just ordinary people living their ordinary but interesting lives. I’ve learned to love them all. If you are looking for relaxing reading, this series is for you.
These books are very reminiscent of the “Mrs. Julia” series, but center more around Mildred, her faith, and her church. There are funny characters that add entertainment and a few times I actually laughed out loud. Good, clean reading.
Mildred sounds very much like a wonderful, Christian lady and good friend. Oh, she's not perfect but she realizes her weaknesses and prays to overcome them. These books are lovely and offer both humor and wisdom!
I am thoroughly enjoying this set of books! Following Mildred Budge on her journey along with other church ladies has been awesome! From being in a bad car accident, to buying a house to rent ouf, to possibly fostering a baby, this will hold your attention!
This book develops the characters to the next level. They are beginning to feel like friends. You laugh out loud and feel the tender pull of aging emotions. Can't wait to see what happens next.
I loved the first in series about Mildred Budge and this second one is even better! There are so many nuggets of Godly wisdom! It's even laugh out loud funny too. I am excited about reading the third one.
When Mildred agrees, reluctantly, to house two missionaries in her home, her life changes forever. Enjoy reading this book on a abiding in the grace and love of Jesus.
I am loving these Mildred Budge books! Mildred is a delightful church lady, and her community remind me of characters from Mitford and Watervalley. Mildred is insightful, and she makes me laugh out loud!
Not only is the story engaging, I enjoy how Mildred explains her relationship with Jesus Christ. It was beautifully described! can't wait to read the next book.
Such a sweet and thought provoking story. Full of love and learning and leaning on others. It’s a faith filled story, an easy read but so comforting…give her a chance! She deserves it!!
This was a very inspiring story. If you like inspirational books, you may like this series. It about Faith, love, understanding, forgiveness and conditional ❤️ love. It makes you want to be a better person in spite of our flaws.
Once again, Daphne Simpkins draws us into the life and adventures of Mildred Budge, retired schoolmarm and a Christian who lives her faith every day. Delightful and engaging!
All through this lovely book you feel the love of Jesus shining around the women we meet. Mildred is the leader of women in her examples of how we treat and understand eall.
I can relate to the church ladies. There is so much adventure even though in retirement. Yet the admonition that Jesus Saves is the foundation of any new adventure... even going down an embankment!
