Amazing book. It should be obligatory reading for property developers, architects, house-building companies and the gormless wealthy types that appear on Grand Designs. Buildings should adhere to local building materials and regional styles (i.e. working with the landscape) rather than being dumped on their environment.

Still the definitive work on traditional English construction. His waspish criticism and aesthetic eccentricities, notably his loathing of chimney pots mark this out from a more standard, balanced and worthy academic survey. He did history at Oxford and art history at the Courtauld but nevertheless had a sound practical grasp of building construction and craftsmanship.

An in-depth look at the materials of English vernacular architecture their relation to the geology and natural world around them. Very informative, but if it was to be reprinted a modern edition would benefit from colour photographs interspersed at the relevant places throughout the book.

I’d frankly describe this book as applied geology. Detailed, a bit pedantic, but very informative.
