Francis Manapul is a comic book artist living in Toronto, Canada currently working for DC comics. His list of credits include the forthcoming Adventure Comics, and Superman Batman. In the past he's worked on titles like Legion of Super-Heroes, Iron and the Maiden, Necromancer, Sept Guerrieres, Tomb Raider, Darkness, G.I Joe and of course Witchblade.
Loved the artwork and the little plot twists added. I didn’t like Patty in the tv show, both times I rewatched The Flash, and I love Iris in the show; but, it’s the opposite here. I didn’t mind Patty, though we didn’t see much of her. But, Iris? She annoyed me. Honestly wanted to smack her.
So, now I’m going to continue with the next issue!
“My mom once told me that “life is locomotion… If you’re not moving, you’re not living. But there comes a time when you’ve got to stop running away from things… and you’ve got to start running towards something, you’ve got to forge ahead. Keep moving. Even if your path isn’t lit… trust that you’ll find your way.”

This was part of an attempt to read all the #1 issues of DC’s New 52 relaunch. I read a substantial amount of The Flash during Rebirth. So I sort of know where the characters end up by the end of New 52. I definitely think I should go back and give this a read. I forgot how much I enjoy reading this character and Francis Manupul’s writing and art gel so well with the character. I thought it interesting that Barry sort of starts out with a romantic partner in Patty Spivot, (who I had only ever seen in the tv show). But die hard fans, never fear; Iris is still trying to dog down Barry and the Flash in order to get a news scoop. Meanwhile a sort of generic team of covert soldiers is wreaking havoc on central city and Barry’s college friend Manuel gets tangled up with the wrong people dragging the Flash down in. I’m actually very curious to see where this could go, so I would definitely check back in.
The New 52 introduces us to Barry Allen once again—scientist, forensic investigator, and the Fastest Man Alive. Francis Manapul wastes no time setting the tone: sleek art, fluid motion, and a clean redesign of Flash’s suit. The story focuses on Barry’s dual life—his attempts to balance his work and his hero duties—and reintroduces Iris West as a journalist trying to uncover the truth behind his disappearances. The real hook comes when Barry’s old friend Manuel Lago returns, only to be killed by mysterious figures who seem to be clones of himself. It’s a strong debut that blends mystery, action, and emotional weight, all captured in Manapul’s gorgeous kinetic panels.
3.5 I liked the other comic I read. I still love the flash and it was good. Honestly feel bad for the turbine and that guy with the sister. Sometimes confusing as heck but still entertaining.
This issue had plenty of things that give the series a solid start: a main character with personality and easy-to-follow action scenes and flashbacks. I also appreciated the panel layout when Barry Allen works in his apartment, running some tests and pacing and thinking. The dialogue feels natural enough and the supporting characters seem strong enough that I want to keep reading. As a bonus, there are several capable women in the story already, though I don't think this issue passes the Bechdel test.
4.5 - I maintain that this is amongst the most perfect first issues of all time. It explains just enough about our hero, easily introduces a large amount of his cast, and places him into conflict, all without ever relying on heavy-handed exposition. Also: it's gorgeous.
While it starts out really strong - with some neat art concepts to denote the Flash's speed - the endless dithering about the nature of the "speed force" (never my favorite part of the Flash mythology) weighs down the second half of the collection.
This book is epic! I can't wait to get the next book!! Flash is my favorite hero!! I recommend to everyone who wants to read more about Flash. It was very easy to read. I wish it was longer though..
My nephew has my issues from 2010 so I decided to go ahead and read the issues from the new 52. The story is off to a promising start and I love the illustrations.
