This book is feloniously mis-titled. There is very little "basic" information to be found here. Many of the techniques and procedures described seem quite advanced--at least to this neophyte scale modeler. Perhaps true ship modelers are born superior and possess these skills innately, but I certainly wasn't and don't. The book contains no such discussions of basic tools, materials, and skills as I've become accustomed to seeing in other introductory scale modeling materials. There are none of the start-to-finish, step-by-step build descriptions such as you'd expect to find in a "basic" modeling publication. Also, the many illustrations, while welcome, are often ambiguous and confusing, failing to clearly indicate within their busy frames just exactly where the reader is supposed to direct his or her attention. The fact that they're almost exclusively black-and-white doesn't help. To reiterate: This book seems way too advanced for beginning ship modelers. Experienced modelers will likely enjoy it, but I found it hard to follow and difficult to understand. Kalmbach, please, re-title this one!
