Based on American rather than British English, this is among the first Russian dictionaries revised for the post-Soviet era. Includes new political terminology, new Russian institutions, new countries and republics and new city names. Contains 26,000 entries in the English-Russian section and 40,000 words in the Russian-English section. Irregularities in Russian declensions and conjugations appear at the beginning of each entry.
So, obviously you won't be sitting down with this by the fire for an evenings entertainment. And perhaps in a world of smartphones it's obsolete. But I found it indispensable when learning Russian. And when traveling there I carried it with me most of the time (it's big, but for as comprehensive as it is it's not that big).
I like this dictionary for its use of examples. You can look up a word that you don't know at all, and see how it's used in a sentence for pretty much all its meanings. Russian teachers, however, told me it should not be trusted 100% of the time, and maybe be supplememted with the Oxford Russian Dictionary.
This is, by far, the best English to Russian dictionary I've used yet. The examples are straight-forward and easy to understand, and the English is American English!
If you're currently learning Russian, buy this dictionary. It's incredibly helpful to both beginning and advanced learners
