Sea Princess Azuri 1 features story and art by Erica Reis. Azuri is the mermaid princess and the only royal heir of the Orcans, a race of whale-merpeople that lives in a magical environment deep within the ocean. Azuri is betrothed to Prince Unagi, leader of the Eel people. Their marriage is arranged as a means to bring peace to two kingdoms. But soon Azuri falls in love with Thalo, a royal Ocean guard, and her world falls apart! Princess Azuri is faced with the most difficult decision of her Should she save the world or follow her heart?!
This has some of the most creative world-building and lore I've ever seen with mermaids!
While the story itself was good (not a favorite, but I enjoyed it), this book delivered in blowing my expectations out the water and more! I found it completely fascinating how the mermaids are based off animal species, and in this case with Princess Azuri, it was orcas. It was such a cool concept and one I deeply enjoyed! It totally inspired my writer heart that mermaids can be so much more than what we usually see and read in books and movies.
Plus, SEALICORNS!! They are so cute!
The art really added to the beauty of everything I shared above! Usually it's story first and then art second for me, but this was very much art first and then story.
While this manga is sadly out of print, if you can get your hands on it, I would highly recommend it to those who are looking for a fresh perspective on mermaids!
This is the first of a two volume manga series. If follows Orca princess Azuri (half human, half killer whale) who has to make an arranged marriage to Unagi, the Eel Prince (half man half eel) even though she's in love with her bodyguard Thalo.
While far from original, I absolutely adored the arranged marriage/bodyguard love triangle story. Also liked the characters but especially the unique nature of the hybrids - I've NEVER come across merwhales in literature before (only art) and we also have mer-eels, sealicors (unicorn seals) as well as a couple of other hybrids - one looks like half girl, half lobster and the other one might be half man, half dolphin. Huge thumbs up there.
What lets this down is the art, the faces with their large flat noses, chunky bodies and blunt ended shapes just don't appeal to me at all. I find it quite ugly which just doesn't sit well with such a beautiful/magical story.
Although this manga is aimed at the younger end of the spectrum mer fans of all ages will enjoy it. I'd certainly love to see more stories in this universe.
Read this at the store today. I almost put it down after a few pages because it seemed too silly, but I ended up really enjoying it. I loved the artwork.
It's cute, though I'm sad to learn that it seems there's only two volumes and the second one is out of print. Not sure I'm going to keep this one since I probably won't get to read the second without spending a lot of money on it.
Really enjoyable beginning to Azuri's adventures. Azuri has an arranged marriage with the eels but she is falling in love with her childhood friend. Oh dear ;)
