In less than three years, I’ve gone from being the worst waitress in LA to living out my childhood dreams of singing my songs to people all over the world. Sometimes, it feels as if the last few years have encompassed a few decades. . . . You might have heard my voice on the radio, seen me onstage and on the red carpet, or in a music video, but that’s only a part of the story. In these pages, I’m revealing a more complete picture of what my life is really like. It’s not all glamorous and it’s not all pretty, but it’s all real. . . . I want you to come on a whirlwind journey with an all-access pass to My Crazy Beautiful Life.
Kesha Rose Sebert, better known by the mononym Kesha (stylized Ke$ha), is an American pop singer and songwriter. In 2005, at eighteen, Kesha was signed to Dr. Luke's record label, Kemosabe Entertainment, and publishing company. Although an active musician since then, singing background vocals and writing songs for other artists, her breakthrough only came in early 2009 after appearing on Flo Rida's number one single, "Right Round."
Her debut single, "Tik Tok", released in late 2009, reached number one in eleven countries. Her debut album, Animal, was released in January 2010 and debuted at number one in the US, Canada and Greece. By September, Kesha had sold two million albums worldwide and released three more top ten singles from Animal. The album was re-released with a companion extended play, Cannibal, in November, preceded by the chart-topping lead single, "We R Who We R".
Kesha has cited artists such as Madonna, Debbie Harry, Queen, Johnny Cash, Aaron Neville, Bob Dylan and Beastie Boys as musical influences. Her music incorporates elements of dance-pop, and she uses a spoken word rapping style on many songs.
Seen at City of Books My Crazy Beautiful Life by Ke$ha is a book that I found on of my trips to BAM (Books-A-Million). I enjoy listening to Ke$ha's feel-good catchy pop songs so I figured I would read it. I got it at my library and read the entire book during a half hour car ride. My Crazy Beautiful Life really had a ton of humor and it was a very entertaining read.
We learn of Ke$ha's roots with being born at a party, getting accepted into Ivy Leagues like Columbia, dropping out of High School, and sneaking to Prince's house in just few pages. I was surprised but My Crazy Beautiful life was filled with tons of awesome quotes such as: "This is my dream. This is the only thing that I have been put on Earth to do and this is just the beginning."
This isn't exactly sophisticated Shakespearean text but it's definitely alot more fun to read. I particularly loved this little anecdote about glitter (for those of you who don't know Ke$ha is a glitter fanatic). When talking about glitter Ke$ha remarked: "It's like marking your territory. And if I get lost you can just follow the trail of glitter to me.....My assistant told me: 'Sometimes I think I have dandruff, but then I realize it's glitter'."
Besides all of Ke$ha's fun stories about concerts and making music, My Crazy Beautiful Life explores serious topics too. Ke$ha addresses bullying and how she was bullied for being different and an individual. "I know how it feels to be bullied; I know it can stay with you for a long time. But I always had a dream and a determined mind." Ke$ha overcame all of her haters and bullies and she didn't let them change who she is. If Ke$ha let those haters dictate and change who she is, Ke$ha wouldn't be the record-selling hit she is. Ke$ha also talks about how important family is to her and about her relationship with her mom.
Basically My Crazy Beautiful Life was a fun light read that was entertaining. It's not entirely a light read because Ke$ha does explore some serious controversial topics. The pictures in this book are pretty cool and had a nice touch to Ke$ha's memoir. If you're a Ke$ha fan or not you'll definitely have a blast reading this memoir of Ke$ha's life so far. I wish Ke$ha all the best luck for the future but I don't think she needs it. This review took longer to write than the reading of this book.
I've always been intrigued by Ke$ha, mostly because I wish I had the balls to wear wild makeup, glitter and big hair on a daily basis like she does. And I liked her first album. But then I saw her perform and give an interview on Conan, and I knew I wanted to learn more about her. I picked up this book hoping for a colorful back story and some juicy tour gossip. What I got was something completely different than what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it just the same.
This book is less a memoir than it is a scrapbook. There are tons of photos, so if you like that sort of thing (I do), you'll like this. Ke$ha also tells lots of little anecdotes from along her journey. I would have liked more stories from her early days, but alas, the majority come from the tour for her first album.
All told, Ke$ha is a solid writer with entertaining tales. I hope someday she'll write a more comprehensive memoir, because she certainly seems to have a life worth recounting.
This is a perfect book. I might be biased, because I adore Kesha, but this book is a perfect combination of autobiography, explanation of an album, and collection of photos.
Kesha talks about her life, starting from her birth, going through the earliest days of her career, and the making of and touring for her first two albums. She doesn't skip details even on the wildest parts, and I appreciate that in an autobiography. She delves into both the wild, always partying part of herself and the more serious, mature part. She talks about the meanings behind some of her best songs and the inspirations behind Warrior, which was just coming out around that time.
This is a book that's great for both the die-hard Kesha fans and all those people who look at us and think we're absolutely insane for loving a "dumb popstar who never sings about anything but getting wasted." There's a lot more to her that people don't really know until they read things like this.
I'm not giving this book one star because its about Ke$ha, I'm giving it one star because its not about Ke$ha. This book is more hallow than most interviews I've read with her. If a pop star takes the to put together a book, even something that functions more like a scrapbook than an autobiography, I want something that gives me at least as much insight as her other self-explorations.
My Crazy Beautiful Life is a short book. Its not the kind of deep biography where Kesha write her heart out. By the time I finished I don't feel like I even learn anything new about Kesha. It mainly talks about her family, going on tours, working on albums
This was not what I hoped it'd be. I knew that it was going to have a lot of pictures, but the weird thing about this book was that there is no transition between pages and sometimes paragraphs; like each page has a kind of random story Ke$ha is sharing. This can make sense for a photobook like this, but the first thirty or so pages were written more consistently so to have that suddenly change was just odd. The book was also very repetitive, with Ke$ha saying again and again that she loves her fans, which is sweet and all, but she didn't need to say that every five pages. Overall, this honestly felt like it could've been better off as a blog with quick captions for photo posts and I'm not sure why it's presented as a memoir type book when it's not. 2.5 stars just because I really like Ke$ha though.
i didn't expect much from this book but it turned out to be a great one and ke$ha sounds likeable despite her antics.
this well-written (tour?) memoir reveals the real ke$ha, well, not entirely though. after i bought this book, i read about the incident that happened during her early years in LA.
Kind of interesting. Very anecdotal and superficial. It glosses over her life, highlighting tiny, seemingly insignificant details. It's her story to tell the way she wishes, but don't expect to get too much insight.
This is more so a holographic hardcover magazine than a book, w/ scrapbook tour collages and article-esque snippets. Ironically, my copy was stolen from a London library and purchased on eBay. There’s little info out about this book for some reason, as though it’s rare even though I snagged it for $5. I hope she does another because this was pubbed in 2012 right before the Dr Luke allegations and when she was rehabbed for anorexia/bulimia. That was around the height of her fame and while I looped “Sleazy” and “Animal” on the school bus, so I don’t know how this book never made my radar—nor her two-season MTV show of the same title (though the episodes I just caught on YouTube are underwhelming and story-forced). Also, I didn’t realize until Reddit said, her fame started to fizzle because her singles “Die Young” and “No One’s Getting Out Alive” released right before the Sandy Hook and Batman movie shootings so radios banned it.
One of the first pictures is of toddler her squatting nude as if to pee, making for a kinda uncomfortable opening but hints at her signature bluntness. Not surprising I suppose if you’ve seen how trashy/creepy her mom Peebe is who she adores. Outside of the book, I never liked how Peebe’s been pushing her kids into movies/TV as soon as they could walk and how the night Kesha’s producer Dr Luke allegedly dosed/assaulted her, Peebe’s response seemed so meek. She didn’t fly out to see Kesha then or cause a stir until it affected Kesha’s record deal years later, like the money mattered more to Peebe (which of course it did if she’s letting her teenage daughter sleep at strange Hollywood men’s houses and not lift a finger to help her leave). We also learn straightaway that Peebe wanted her friend group to randomly impregnate her even though she was already a “struggling single mother” in the most famous cities in California so Kesha never knew who her dad was.
Though Kesha’s fam were always musicians opening for big acts, they didn’t get much more money than to party and pay the insane rent. Yet Kesha blew up by 18, featuring in a Flo Rida song, doing backing vocals for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Rihanna. She always lived like a hippie gypsy, thrifting and dumpster diving for fun, scrounging every dollar for whiskey and tacos. She soon wrote a song and toured with her idol, Alice Cooper, who ironically wondered if they should tone down the lyrics.
Though it’s a bit interesting to know how much planning goes into the choreography (like stage size and cues), we don’t get more personal than that. There are no implications of any shady Luke behavior or depression. So the “gritty” parts of her life advertised are literally just being sweaty from drunk dancing or getting a sore throat or stick and poke tattoo. I’m also disappointed how low-res many of these pictures are. I know this all had to be run through censors/PR, but it’s very cliche and shallow and has a lot of pictures of her hanging off of Dr Luke uninitiated and goes above and beyond to compliment/mention him so maybe that’s why nobody promos this anymore?
After a recent re-read, here is my review: This is a beautiful book by Kesha. The highlight is definitely the mix of photographs taken from Kesha's own private collection of behind-the-scenes studio times and journeys of self discovery as well as tour photos and fan interactions. It is more of a scrapbook than a tell all novel, which suits the theme: Kesha's life, with one of the main messages in her work being in the present and enjoying life. It makes sense for a collection of snapshots rather than an extended account. If you have seen the docu-series of the same name about Kesha, there are certainly stories and moments that are highlighted again in this book. The only downside is that, unfortunately, there are photos in here taken with and of her abuser, which can be uncomfortable knowing what we know now. It would certainly be an interesting read if Kesha does a sequel (whether it be in similar vein to this book or a more autobiographical piece). I would highly recommend it if you a die-hard Kesha fan a.k.a an animal.
Dearest Ke$ha... I've been a huge fan of hers since Tik Tok hit the radio. I stood behind her as a proud member of #TeamKesha through her legal battles and remember fondly watching her show on MTV under the same title as this book. So...I was a little let down at the sheer lack of story in this. While the photographs and visuals of her lyrics and writing were stunning, there was so little writing and insight that it was more of a scrapbook than a memoir. I wanted more, I wanted Kesha to tell me about her childhood about her writing process, not just see the scribbled notes. With only a small paragraph on each page, there was much more memoir to be desired. It was devastating to read the passages about how close she was to Dr. Luke though...
“My mom taught me to write honestly and tell a good story. Writing songs was, and is, my favorite thing to do in the world.” (page 12)
“My life has changed dramatically but i wouldn’t trade this crazy beautiful life for anything.” (page 58)
Berbicara mengenai kehidupannya semasa kecil, kehidupannya sama seperti orang kebanyakan.
“I am speaking from experience when i say just give the haters the finger and be true to yourself. You can’t be a victim. You have to be a warrior.” (page 82)
Bila kamu penasaran dengan kisah hidup seorang Kesha, baca saja My Crazy Beautiful Life—sekalipun kamu bukan penggemarnya.
“I never try to have expectations, because as soon as you expect something, you can be disappointed. But as my first headlining tour came to a close, i realized that this tour had exceeded any expectations that i could ever have had, and all of it was made possible because of my fans.” (page 122)
UPDATE 15/09/2016: Changed the rating from 3 to 4 stars because I keep going back to this book and re-reading it because, quite frankly, it makes me happy. As a memoir, it's a little simplistic and very photo-heavy. As an account of Kesha's life, it very pointedly only outlines her best experiences, most of them regarding her first tour or the writing of her album Warrior. But it's cute, it's hyper-postive, and Kesha's attitude is honestly one of the most inspiring and authentic you're likely to find amongst her peers. She won me over with Tik Tok and I am not even slightly sorry. This isn't a 5 star book, but it is a good one, and Kesha herself is, as another reviewer commented, a 5 star human being.
I read this book in maybe an hour; it really functions more like a scrapbook with a few of Kesha's blog entries than a traditional autobiography. She's funny, though, and seems like a very likeable person, even if this book doesn't say much about her that she hasn't already talked about online or in interviews.
However. There are nonetheless parts of this book that are just plain uncomfortable now, when Kesha's eating disorder and the sexual and mental abuse she suffered at the hands of her producer are public knowledge. I can't help but wonder how the book would have been if she wasn't censoring parts of her (crazy, beautiful) life, and it makes it hard to read at points.
Also, I kept cringing whenever she mentioned Dr. Luke. Fuck that guy.
I've been in love with this girl since 2009 when TiK ToK was making its way into the the charts worldwide. Being a fan of Ke$ha introduced me to some other fans that are now some of the closest friends I have. That and so many are the reason I'm in love with this hot glittery ass mess. I always found inspiration in her music. I know she may not the best songwriter of all time. But, she has some dope songs that changed my whole high school life.
So, once she announced she's releasing a book, I was beyond excited. I couldn't put my hands on it until 3 months post the actual book release date. And once I did, I didn't leave it until I read the last page of it. The book was a very light read. It's basically a picture book. Lots of never-before seen photos of Ke$ha. She mentions in the book about things she never talked about before in any interview, which was very exciting to me.
As a fan, this book was everything I could ask for. Now, all I'm asking for, is for this bitch to get her ass in WA and sells out The Best Night of My Life show.
Ke$ha's autobiography is not your traditional prose only book. In true Ke$ha fashion, this is more of a scrapbook with lots of pictures and more than a little glitter. I'll admit that I'm a big Ke$ha fan, so once I got over the artsy format, I loved it. Ms. Sebert tells her story in chronological order, and while it isn't deep, she provides a satisfying amount of detail about her childhood and career through the creation of the Warrior album for a coffee table book. As long as you're not a Ke$ha fan who will be disappointed by anything less than a lengthy tell-all, this quick fun read that provides a little more background on everyone's favorite unapologetic party girl will satisfy.
As far as libraries go, plenty of public libraries are going to want to stock this one, especially ones with strong YA non-fiction sections, but that's about it.
Kesha is a fantastic, radical person. She has always seemed really authentic to me. And though she comes from the same producers and co-writers as a lot of other pop stars out there, she seems one of the precious few I would say really is in charge of her own image and sexuality. Let it be known that Kesha was making penis cakes long before Miley Cyrus knew what a penis was. She only WISHES she were this cool. This is a fun, quick book. It's mostly pictures, but you still manage to learn a lot about Kesha (unless you are a die-hard fan who already knows everything). For example, Kesha really was born at a party, and she doesn't know who her dad is (nor does she want to know). I want to raid Kesha's closet and let her do my hair. As a preteen I wore tons of glitter to attract boys (hehe), so it's no wonder she's one of my favorite artists. Rock on, fellow K.
I must say I didn't know what to expect when I read this, and I wasn't entirely disappointed. Yes, there's not much substance. Yes, it reads like a quickly thrown together scrapbook (with excruciatingly obvious typos at times). But it's her scrapbook put together her way, and it was beautifully human. Her love for her family and fans seems very genuine, and I enjoyed reading about her hectic childhood and how she worked so hard to get where she is. No one can call her lazy for sure.
Final thoughts...I wonder how this book would read if written today given her recent rehab visit.
I could not put this piece of inspiration down.. I've always loved Ke$ha but getting to have an inside glimpse of what her life was like back then and her beliefs, struggles and passion for writing has made me even more of a fan (I don't see how that's possible). I really admire her constant writing of songs, as I can relate with writing stories, poems etc, and this book really opened up how much her music really comes from inside. It's more of a scrapbook so I finished it in two days but I didn't want it to end. Ke$ha's friggin awesome. Long live the animalss
I found this book to be great! It wasn't too hard to read and because it's written and about my favourite singer, so I was always going to read it. It gives great insight into parts of Kesha's life. It i dues many pictures, so it's good if you like a book with lots of photos. Kesha if you don't already know is a singer, songwriter who's had such hits like "Tik Tok", "Your Love Is My Drug", "Timber" and "Die Young". It only cost $12.99 (NZD) on iTunes.
Eh. It wasn't much but then again, I didn't have many expectations for it. I like a couple of Ke$ha songs, and I like coffee table books, which is what this was. If you're not a big fan of Ke$ha, like me, but you're curious, this is an easy read. I liked that it had little journal snippets and stuff, and personal photographs.
It was your standard musician book. Not a lot of substance but the pictures were cool.
Oh good Lord... I think I'm the first on goodreads to review this book.
Snagged this at the library today. Took about an hour to read, which I appreciate. Some insight into her background, creative process, and day-to-day life. Nothing earth-shattering, but I found the photos entertaining.
I want those minutes of my life back. Even if I was a HUGE fan of Kesha... this book would still be boring. She said absolutely nothing insightful or even remotely interesting. Basically... she just gradually lost clothing as the book went on, and more penis doodles appeared. With a couple blurbs of entirely irrelevant text in the middle. Bam. You don't have to read the book now.
This was not the best autobiography ever written, but it was certainly entertaining enough. It was also obviously written in her voice, which was nice - you never know what you're going to get with these celebrity books.
