I'd have rated this higher except the author did not have the people come to the realization that they should have had their pet leashed to prevent disturbing and harming wildlife and disturbing other people. Even more so since their dog did not respond to commands such as "Come."

In addition, the illustrations showed the adult in the canoe without a life jacket.

This is an entertaining book about a boy and his mother canoeing on a lake with their dog swimming alongside. There is drama as their dog attempts to make contact with a mother loon and her chicks. Overall, the narrative is engaging and the illustrations are colorful, complementing the story nicely. We enjoyed reading this book together.
