Ok, this book seems to me to be the Russian equivalent to Strunk and White's "Elements of Style." Which means it is a good reference book but not necessarily a good textbook. What I did with it was to read it through somewhat casually and to continue the immersion study of Russian that I have been doing. In that respect it was very good.

I paid 4 or 5 bucks for this and it is as "Elements of Style" a slim book condensed to the most fundamental presentation. I think for an intermediate or somewhat advenced Russian student it is important to have, not so much for a beginner. I am not studying Russian the same way I used to with endless textbook exercises. I listen to youtube vids and read books and newspapers everyday and have begun to have a bit more organic understanding of the language. But basic rules are very important and the first read-through was helpful. Just like "Elements of Style" though it is the kind of reference that needs to be revisited fairly regularly.

"Essential Russian Grammar assumes that you have a limited amount of time at your disposal to study Russian and that your objective is simple everyday communication, both spoken and written. This book, therefore, does not attempt to offer a complete outline of all aspects of Russian grammar, even in a highly condensed version. It does, however, offer a series of aids to help you use more effectively phrases and words that you have already learned. The book will introduce you to the most common structures and forms of Russian and a selected number of the most useful rules."

Very useful, short summaries of grammar. Well organized. This gives a somewhat different take on Russian grammar than other sources I have.
