Soul Matters by Yolanda Tonette Sanders is a Christian read about Christian people and how Christians are not always the best and sometimes can do more harm then good but sometimes there are good Christian people out there in the world. I like how the author incorporated some real life issues for Wendy and her family. Wendy gets an unexpected phone call and finds out some really bad news about her 'perfect' life. The rest of the book is told with Wendy and her decisions which affect the rest of the story and what happens with Wendy and her marriage, along with her family. I liked the story as it is a Christian story about what to do when you feel like all hope is lost and you can't understand what is going on and why. The author did a good job on the families of black people being not what we see in movies and in real life where there are single moms and single moms with babies/young kids. This was a good read for anyone who likes a good Christian story with family dynamics and even a bit of romance thrown in!

I bought this book a long time ago in a purposeful effort to support black authors. While, I have read it a few times- it was obviously before I started tracking books on Goodreads, because I have no reading record of it. In my annual bookshelf decluttering, I have always chosen to keep it. I'm glad I did, I had forgotten the storyline and it is certainly a timeless one. Christians are far from perfect, and the bitter, judgmental ones are often the ones with the most to "hide". It also beautifully illustrates fully functioning, loving and strong black families-- something we don't often see in media, where it usually only shows the single moms, the black fathers being portrayed as "players with lots of 'baby-mommas'.

I'm happy to see that the author has since written some other books, I'll be looking for those.

Enjoy read this book tremendously and first read by this author! The storyline reminded me of other books but this one stood out better which show’s characters aren’t perfect and has flaws just like everyone else but talks about depending on God and often we forget to do that. Important to have Faith and trust God in all things. The important part was how the Grandmother changed her ways towards the end and I felt like I was in church! Great read!

Bless the Lord, O My Soul

There are so many reasons I loved this book, just to name a few: 1) A beautiful love story 2) A story of forgiveness 3) A story of redemption 4) A story of people with flaws and how God shows His love when we seek Him. Another awesome read Ms Yolonda!

I liked this book very much. Wendy was stupid for what she did, but in the end everything worked out for her and Kimberly I felt sorry for her when her grandmother used to get on her, but it had a good ending. Good read.
