Breaking All My Rules by Trice Hickman 302 pages

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Featuring: Washington D. C., Break-up, PTSD, Fashion, Toiletries, Jury Duty, Sex - overly detailed, Six Degrees Trope, Wrong Side of the Tracks Trope, Public Office, Drama, Infidelity, Book Preview (Secret Indiscretions, Prologue and Chapter 1)

Rating as a movie: NC-17 for sexual content

My rating: ⭐⭐¾

Synopsis: A woman meets the perfect man during jury duty but must ignore her values to pursue him.

My thoughts: 5% - 😞 I need a thriller, this started off okay but went on a tangent in the 2nd chapter.
10% - I'm getting real tired of her referring to this man as "the Great Dane."
18% - I don't know if it's because the story isn't messy, but so far it's slow.
32% - Plot is a bit all over the place. I was thinking this isn't how jury duty works, but now I'm not sure.
63%- It's okay. The drama I just encountered is mild compared to her other books and reminiscent of Tyler Perry.
80% - Toxic and wack.

So many issues with this story. It doesn't flow well, bounces around and leaves loose ends. Then there's the romance, I don't like the way this guy was talking to MC, they both were bad but he was horrible. His outbursts were verbal abuse and it was considered justified, no thank you. Final issue was the ending fell flat.

Recommend to others?: Not really, this is most definitely skippable.

Beautiful By Design’s (BBD) book club meeting was hosted by Courtney. Big shout out and thanks to you for inviting us into your home. It is always a great time when shared with friends and family over great food, drinks, and boundless conversations stemming from our most recent book read. BBD read “Breaking All My Rules”, by author, Trice Hickman. Thanks to the author for providing discussion questions to get the dialogue started.

This was the fifth read in this book cycle where the host selects a wish list book she has been wanting to read. Breaking All My Rules received a solid 3.0 out of a 5-star rating by BBD. Unanimously, we felt the author spent too much time in the first two chapters of the book being repetitive as well as reiterating the same things repeatedly throughout the book. We also felt there was no closure on any of the characters other than [SPOILER ALERTS] Erica and Jerome got married. For example, whatever happened to Claude? Did he continue to pursue Erica? Did Ashley resolve her triangle of love? Did Ashley’s fiancé have an affair with the white female from Tennessee or close the business deal? There was no follow-up between the presumable argument between Ashley’s fiancé’s parents when the wife was so taken aback at the function when she saw Jerome. After the shocking discovery of the tangled web between the parents of Jerome and Erica, did the parents reconcile or divorce? Did Erica’s mother end up with Parnell or did she go on to live a separate life. What happened with Sasha and the baby mother issues? We really anticipated more from Sasha’s character from the way the author built up the story. It was a letdown when that was all we got. And we are still not certain of the role Miss Maureen played in the courthouse, other than to point out the story about her daughter? [SPOILER ALERT STOP] This book ended abruptly. It should have either been longer to close out each character’s storyline or the focus should have been solely on the main characters with minimal plots for the supporting cast. BBD anticipated a series of sequels to breakout each character’s storyline or something in the prologue to indicate what happened with those characters lives but found there were neither.

On a positive note, we enjoyed reading about the familiar references to places in and around DC. where we have frequented. The author also did a great job of developing her characters personalities. We could get a sense of how each character was and very relatable to everyday people. Overall, it was a very easy read. We won’t say this was a completely terrible book because the storyline had great potential. However, we cannot say it was a great book due to the lack of character closure in the story.

Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy

A notice for jury duty could not have come at a worse time for Erica Stanford. The owner of Opulence, a high-end bath and body care boutique, she is gearing up for Fashion Week. Her products are to be included in swag bags. This opportunity could be crucial to her business’s future so attending jury duty presents a huge snag in her plans and preparations.

While happy to have some time off from his job as a garbage man, Jerome Kimbrough dreads the possibility of being stuck in court all day. Also having had more than one brush with the law in his youth, court isn’t a place he’s looking forward to being.

The attraction is instant. The chemistry is off the chart. Obviously from different sides of the track, will this couple be able to overcome their differences, to break all their rules?

“Breaking All My Rules” by Trice Hickman is a love story. This tale of love is also a story about change, differences and acceptance. Hickman keeps things lively and the story moving as obstacles occur, realistic obstacles with emotions to match, that must be dealt with. In doing so, she delivers another enjoyable and entertaining read.

With “Unexpected Interruptions,” Keeping Secrets & Telling Lies,” “Playing the Hand You’re Dealt,” and “Breaking All My Rules,” Trice Hickman is a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to reading more from this talented author.

This is a good different worlds story. Life was handing them issues. Ericka and Jerome had a connection and acted on it. It was exhausting to deal with and just when they thought the path was clear, they find out that someone else’s past may hinder their future…if they let it. This story kept my attention. Ericka and Ashley both got on my nerves but I powered through.

Breaking All My Rules by Trice Hickman - 4 Stars

Erica Stanford has it all...she comes from a wealthy family, excellent education, owns an exquisite boutique and has made more money then she ever imagined...but (there is always a but)...she is not happy in love. To add to her recent breakup she has a huge business opportunity that isn't working out and she has been called to jury duty. Things are going to hell in a hand basket (or so they say).

Expectations usually fall short so she didn't think anything good would develop from showing up at the courthouse. Then she saw him - tall, dark and handsome with a touch of ruggedness - what is his name? She held her breath until she realized they would be on the same criminal case. Her heart may have hit the jackpot but (yep another but) they are from very different backgrounds. You see Jerome Kimbrough, was a city worker with hopes of starting a construction business, working to take the GED, and questionable history. Unless she breaks her rules this won't work...

Hickman is a master storyteller and her characters jump off the page. I've always been told that you should be equally yoked with your spouse and this story explores all the relationship taboos - race, class, family background and criminal history. While the plot flowed, I found it interesting that the base story took place in about two weeks. I wanted to read more about about Ashley (she was quite the realist) will she find a man? The relationship between Erica and Jerome's parents needed more explanation for me (trust its a shocker). There seems to be the possibility of a sequel as there were several unanswered questions. As a avid reader that loves a romantic tale being it on cause I'm ready!

I'm wondering if I read the same book based on the reviews that I've seen. While there were many plot lines that seemed intriguing, I think the book's ending will leave readers disappointed, although it appears that there must be a sequel in the making; it would be a logical progression toward answering many of the questions that were left.

Ms. Hickman's Breaking All My Rules may be a fitting title because one would have to break all rules of logic to go along with the story's direction in order to give it a higher review rating.

The book's main plot spans about a week. Erica Stanford and Jerome Kimbrough are selected as jurors in a white-collar crime case. Their relationship develops quickly takes off on a rocket ride that is still reaching orbit. They're already talking love, professing a deep love for each other, and marriage. As a reader, I'm not sure if that's actually realistic. We're talking about the owner of an upscale boutique and a garbage man, here!

There's the dialogue over upward social mobility and race. There's also dialogue over whether two people finding love for the right (or wrong) reasons. There's dumped lovers, scorned lovers, and baby mama drama. Then tying it all together is when individuals face their respective pasts.

If there is a sequel, I would be more intrigued about what happens with the people closely associated with Erica and Jerome than I would with Erica and Jerome.

Lots of twists, turns, and crazy surprises in this one!

On the surface this story seemed to be a rich vs. poor conflict, but it went so much deeper than that. Even though Erica was an educated and successful business owner, she and high school drop-out, sanitation worker, Jerome, had a lot in common.

They were both hard-working, loved their families, and treated other people with respect. They just allowed their sleazy ex-lovers to meddle way too much in their relationship.

However, the connection between their parents was absolutely mind-blowing, and the story's ending was rather abrupt.

Do you remember the intensity of falling in like, lust then love? What about an attraction which continues to build and build then when opportunity presents itself it’s on? But what we don’t realize is the sexual tension which builds behind the scenes which could make the affair seems rushed but if we were really looking we would know it’s been boiling since eye contact. Eye glances, a cup of tea, and unexplained jealousy.

While waiting in the Superior Court building Erica Stamford’s attention is snatched away by what she calls a “Great Dane” on two legs. The Great Dane is Jerome Kimbrough and he has Erica’s attention and she has his.The dance between the two continue each day of jury duty and the tension between them mounts. I enjoyed the tango between these two and also the fact that Erica’s success didn't faze Jerome. She started her own business and her best friend Ashley is also a successful prosecutor, there was quite a bit of girl power in this book, but also relational issues I never expected between Ashley and Jason. Sometimes in life we have to break our own rules and create some new ones so that it includes the things we find we cannot live without.

Ms. Hickman once said in an author interview that she loved writing about her characters because they were beautifully flawed people; I believe that is my connection to her books. I loved this book and am grateful for Ms.Hickman’s writing power and off the chain story telling. If you've ever stepped out of your comfort zone for love then this is the story for you. L-O-V-E ….wow!!!!

We all have “Rules” when it comes to Love….

We all know what we “Want” when it comes to Love….

We all want Love on “Our terms”…

Sorry to burst your bubble…

There are no set rules to Love. Love has a way of sneaking up on you.

The last thing on Erica’s mind is falling in love, especially after breaking up with her boyfriend, Claude six months ago. She spends all of her time running her upscale boutique, Opulence. When Erica is summoned to do jury duty, her love life takes an unexpected turn.

Jerome Kimbrough is a hard-working man who has had his own share of problems, but is determined to turn over a new leaf. When he is summoned for jury duty, he never expects to experience love at first sight.

Will their differences bring them closer or will it drive them further apart.

Breaking All My Rules is a novel that is sure to delight readers. While reading this book someone asked me to describe Trice Hickman’s writing. My response was her words are like warm milk – it soothes the soul. While reading this book I found myself getting lost in the words and the emotions of the characters. I enjoyed the sexual chemistry between the main characters. The writing made it very easy to experience the newness of the relationship.

Side Note: My favorite character was Ashley… I definitely could relate to her on some levels.

I highly recommend this book.

I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Breaking All My Rules
Trice Hickman
http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-All-Ru...

She is
Erica Stanford owner of a very upscale life and bath and body shop named Opulence. She is gorgeous, smart, sexy and jaded from a relationship that wasn’t going to be her happily ever after.

He is
Jerome Kimbrough a handsome and sexy blue collar sanitation worker with dreams. He’s had a tough start in life but is ambitious and focused on what he wants. He’s paid for and still paying for choices he made

They are
on jury duty, and the defendant is not the only one on trial, they are being judged by friends, fauxs and past indiscretions and lives.

Dating a man like Jerome was against all her rules. Dating a woman like Erica was his dream..

Crazy
always steps in at the most inconvenient time. When things and relationships are already fragile and guarded, crazy comes and causes unexpected interruptions, with a twist

This 5 star read was great!
Trice Hickman knows how to build anticipation and how to satisfy readers with challenging characters and provocative storylines.

Trice Hickman penned a novel that held you enticingly enthralled from the onset. Break All My Rules is the journey of Erica Stanford who was born of wealth and is an owner of an upscale boutique and Jerome Kimbrough who is a street savvy sanitation worker and dedicated father that has changed his life’s path.

This tale begins when these two meet during jury duty and there’s an instant attraction. As they try to build a future, their union is plagued with drama from the people around them from non-associates to family to ex‘s . Having to deal with the obvious differences of their life styles and upbringings, things are farther complicated by their family, familial connections and others that are doing things that add strife to their struggling beginning. We witness their trials and triumphs then a long held secret explodes…. read this 5 star novel and see if their love can endure. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

This book was extremely predictable. I picked it up as part of my chapter's book club and I am eager to suggest new books for next month's meeting. This one, besides having a character that shared my first and last names, was not exciting. The author overly used descriptive adjectives and action verbs to thicken the writing, but really all of the fancy descriptors just made it worse. I wanted to like it but I saw the storyline coming from a mile away. In fact, after page 96, I skipped to the very last chapter in the book and it was EXACTLY as I pictured it. Girl sees boy, boy crushes on girl, girl thinks boy is not good enough for her, boy proves he is good enough, boy and girl fall in love, girl has to deal with baby mama drama, boy and girl stay together and in love. Le sigh.

Erica and Jerome seem to be polar opposites, but their need for something meaningful helped them overcome their differences. By breaking her rules, Erica proved that emotions are cures for social differences.
It is not easy for an established person to allow a person who is not into their life. Erica showed strength to overcome the pressures that others placed on the relationship that she wanted to begin.
Even though their relationship seems adverse, I can see it flourishing and adding value to each other's lives.
This is a very good book giving proof that love carries something deeper than what others can see.

Erica Stanford is the owner of a boutique. She comes from a wealthy family. Jerome Kimbrough is a sanitation worker with a checkered past. They meet during jury duty. Despite the strong attraction felt, they had reservations. What will become of this meeting?

I've been following Trice Hickman since her debut and have yet to be disappointed. Breaking All My Rules demonstrates that opposites attract. Hickman hooks you with the twists and turns. I love the character development. The characters and their circumstances are relatable. If you enjoy a story that's real, this is definitely the book for you.

Well Trice Hickman, has done it once again. Writing a book that shows both a business woman, and a blue collar worker. These two characters in this story they come from difference background. But when you filter in the family’s them you know that there going to be problems. You keep reading because you want to know what is going to happen to these two people who found love…

I don’t want to give too much of the story away, because I really did enjoy this story. It only took me a day to read the book, because I needed to get some sleep.

I was really looking forward to this book because I really like this author but I have to admit I have read all of her previous books and loved everyone, but I can't say that about this book. I liked the premise of this story, but the book started off real slow by the time things started to happen in this book it was over. There was a lot of drama in this book and plenty of unresolved issues I am hoping that the next book will close the stories that started in this one and be better written. This author is extremely talented and at a price of $9.00 for a book I expect a full story.

I liked this little love story. It didn't seem to be overly mushy, or unbelievable. Just a story about a guy reaching that time he wants to settle down and get serious. A woman who isn't really looking because she's focused on her business so much, but needs that balance and having a mate would definitely give her that work/life balance. This book had its drama, sex, love and scandal all wrapped up together. I felt like it was an enjoyable read, nothing really sticks out to me that would have made it a great read or a page turner, but I would read more by this author in the future.

I could not put the book down! This story was well written. The different emotions from each character made the story realistic. The first chapter immediately grabbed my attention. This story was filled with drama, and romance. I loved it! If I could give this book a letter grade, I would give it an A+. I look forward to reading more books from this author. Please read Breaking All My Rules, you won't be disappointed.

I enjoyed reading this book. Although, I could've done without the graphic sex and obscenities. The two main characters, Erica and Jerome come from different worlds. She's from the suburbs, has a business and a degree and he is a sanitation worker who has big dreams. They fall in love with each other all while dealing with their own drama. But, despite the drama, they manage to stay together. It is true love at its best.

A woman disregards her social training and unexpectedly comes to love a man outside her class level. The story is decent, but the timeline and actions feel unrealistic. The most notable part about the writing is how often the main characters' physical attributes are described.

This book contains sexual descriptions.

I really tried to like this book. It was good but something was missing. It started with my strong disliking of Jerome's jealousy and showing out. The ending was tied up too easily and left too many unanswered questions.

I enjoyed the book. This was my first book by this author. I hadn't read a romance book in a while, so this was a welcomed distraction from some of the heavier books I've read. I really liked the chemistry of the two main characters Erika and Jerome. Love comes when you least expect it. Good job!
