For ages poets and philosophers have tried to explain death, to give comfort, to soften despair. The Life Beyond shows how the Restoration changed despair to understanding, opening our eyes to the majesty of the plan of salvation. Included in the book are insights into the three degrees of glory, the spirit world, missionary work here and hereafter, and temple work. The authors also explore questions all of us have What do spirits know? What is the purpose of ministering angels? How will those of less than normal mental powers be judged? Here is clear evidence of our eternal nature and our glorious potential in that life beyond mortality.

This book is a well-researched compilation of experiences and teachings from LDS leaders on the subject of death and the spirit world. I find it very comforting. It offers answers to specific questions that are common with grief. Also, it contains some "mysteries" that are not commonly discussed, but were important to my experience. I came away from the book with a stronger sense of connection and common purpose with those who have passed on, and now I have a new love for family history and history in general!
A most insightful look at what the LDS church teaches doctrinally regarding the afterlife--written by two of my favorite authors. There's nothing too earth-shattering here, but the book is filled with great quotes that clarified what I already knew about the subject matter. A worthwhile read.
And a big thank you to the employee at Pioneer Book who gave it to me as a gift...
This is a well-researched, doctrinal book about what happens after we die. It is not a bunch of stories of people who have had near-death experiences. There are many quotes from general authorities and church presidents, and it helps you understand many of the church doctrines on life after death.
This book was published in 1986 soon after the death of Bruce R. McConkie, the father of one of the authors. I learned some principles about our eternal experiences that had either never occurred to me or I had wrong. It is a fairly short book but is full of thought-provoking statements.
I love books written by these two men. They have so much insight. I always learn so much. This book answers many questions about the plan of salvation, life beyond the grave, as revealed to latter-day prophets and prophets of old.
This book is filled with quotes from prophets, apostles and scriptures describing what we know about life after death. Most of what is in here I've heard before but I actually enjoy repetition so it didn't bother me. Most of the doctrine found in this book comes from the Doctrine and Covenants and quotes from Joseph Smith. I did enjoy a few aha moments where the authors shared a concept or a quote that I hadn't heard before.
I especially enjoyed reading this book because it had once belonged to my mom. As I was reading, I could see what passages had stood out to her by looking for what she had underlined with her red pencil. My mother and I shared a love of books and a love of the Gospel so when she died I inherited most of her books.
This book is well organized, and all sources are cited. The book is written by two highly educated brethren (BYU professors) for that reason alone it is well worth the read. I highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about the afterlife.
I found this book to be incredibly insightful. It dives deep into theology from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints associated with the plan of salvation: where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. It leverages modern revelation to clear up common misconceptions that exist in both the Church and the World. It teaches doctrine in great depth. It is a fantastic read for those that enjoy well researched, doctrinally accurate reading. Make sure to read the notes that correspond with the references if you pick it up.
Discussion of various aspects of life after death through the lens of LDS doctrine. Authored by two religious education professors from Brigham Young University.
I'll be adding this book to my "Hall of Fame" collection. I absolutely loved reading this book. It provided a lot of extra details and doctrines that I haven't read in other books.
If you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and have suffered a loss of a loved one forcing you to consider what is happening with them. Please read this book. Answered so many questions, concerns and just thoughts. So liked that each concept was supported by latter day prophets, scripture, or both.
