எனக்கு வரலாறு அதிகம் தெரியாது. ஆனால்,
1. இதுவரை நான் படித்த வரலாற்று நாவல்களில், இதில் வரும் பொறுப்பில்லாத ஒரு தூதுவனை போல் எந்த ஆசிரியரும் படைத்ததில்லை.
2. வேங்கியில் தெலுங்கு? பொன்னியின் செல்வன், உடையார் போன்ற நாவல்களில் தெலுங்கு என்று ஒரு வார்த்தையை படித்தாக ஞாபகமில்லை.
3. பராந்தகர், நடுநிசிக்கு அர்த்தஜாம மண்டபத்துக்கு வந்து விடு என்று சொன்னார். அதோடு போச்சு. அவர்கள் சந்தித்தார்களா?
4. உதவி நாடி வேங்கிக்கு வந்த பாண்டிய மன்னன், பாண்டிய மன்னனின் உதவிக்கு வந்த இலங்கை படை வேங்கியில் பயிற்சி, தளவாடங்கள் சேகரிப்பு என்று பத்து வருடமாக தங்கி இருக்கிறார்கள். கொஞ்சமாவது அடுக்குமா? இந்த பத்து வருடமாக போர் வருகிறது போர் வருகிறது என்று சோழ மன்னன் ஏரி கூட காட்டாமல் இருந்தானா?
5. வேங்கியில் இலங்கை வீரர்களுக்கு கார சாப்பாடு முதலில் பிடிக்கவில்லை, அப்புறம் பழகிடுச்சு. அந்த காலத்திலேயே இப்படியா?

The story of Malarcholai Mangai is not fascinating as much as the name of the novel. Author can write this same story in half size as he had written, but he was explaining everything like that he is saying story for small kids. There was not even big twists in this story, but he had written something in the way that he has to make some twists, but it hadn't worked.
Most importantly don't read this book as a prequel to ponniyin selvan. This author said every twists in ponniyin selvan in a very common way. "Malarcholai Mangai is a spoiler to Ponniyin Selvan".

Very religiously the author has followed Kalki's plot.
But the bravery of certain princes like Raja Aadhithar and Aadhitha Karikalar were not spoken much which is very disappointing.
Only the battle of Thakolam (Raja Aadhithar's death) is worthy to be read.

I read the 5th edition by vanathi pathipagam from Feb 2023.
The story is set as a prequel to Ponniyin Selvan. However most of the story revolves around Maaravarman Pandiyan, enhancing his character mostly. The author has tried to reach the bar Kalki had set. Nevertheless, I find the timeline of the story quite off. He could have mentioned if parallel events were happening simultaneously. The calculation of years was almost always wrong.
*Since the book was written half a decade after Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan, the author could have arranged the story line to match PS. Maybe I forgot about certain plot in PS. I found the book to have some contradictions to plot line when comparing it with PS, because there are some cross over of story between both the books.
*The author could have mentioned about Arinjaya Chozha’s wedding and birth of Sundara Chozhan instead of just stating it in story. This could give the readers a sense of how many years had passed. People were born and characters were introduced in a haphazard manner.
*There was repetition of passage regarding the story behind Pandiya’s inheritance of Lord Indra’s pearl necklace. Such mistakes makes us question the credibility of the editors and publishers as well.
*The book was split into two halves. The first half was decent enough. It kindled a slight interest in the readers. However from the second part the book fell down drastically. Too many people died and the death never felt honourable or readers won’t even feel slight remorse at these death. I remember crying when characters in Kalki’s books. Here the author failed to create connection between characters and readers.
*All of a sudden Mangai - daughter of Paranthaka Chozha 1 is portrayed as wise and courageous woman. There was no indication of it in the first half of the book.
*I could be wrong here but according to Wikipedia the queen of Sundara Chozhan was Vanavan Maadevi but the author had mentioned that Villavan Maadevi as his wife. What should be noticed was that wife of Paranthaka Chozha 1 was Villavan Maadevi as well.
* The last few chapters of story was rushed giving the book a very bad ending.
*I still couldn’t decipher why the book was named Malarchozhai Mangai.
The plot line of the story was too good. If the author had paid some attention to the writing, this book would have reached heights.
It was engaging for 30% of the time and the rest was quite predictable. The author could have avoided spoiling the hidden messages in Ponniyin Selvan.
I would recommend new readers to read the first half of the book (pg 337 in 5th edition of the book) read Ponniyin selvan all 5 parts and then read the rest of the Malarchozhai Mangai. The Kalki’s Magnum Opus - Ponniyin Selvan will lose the charm if you finish reading Malarchozhai Mangai before starting PS. This would be gravest mistake a reader could do.
For music lovers and people who saw PS movie- the lyrics of the song - Vanathi’s Message is written in this book and you can find it in Pg 582. You can maybe play the music while reading it.
You can read this book if you are willing to ignore the timeline mistakes. I would definitely re-read this book if the author or editors make all the necessary changes.
