Well that was disappointing. A book very much in the vain of Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Lost World, the The Land That Time Forgot etc.
However unlike Journey to the Center of the Earth this is a true Hollow Earth novel with all of the geological absurdity that that implies, which is one of the few interesting aspects of the work.

The other good points are that its russian which (on very rare occasions) makes it feel a little different. Also there's some decent repartee amongst our protagonists at times.
Finally there are a few moments of interest towards the end of the novel.

The other 80% or so is unfortunately pretty boring. The writing is basic, and it gets pretty repetitive. See interesting creature, shoot interesting creature, have creature for dinner, rinse, repeat.
Even our hero's actually get bored after a while, and if people are bored with dinosaurs then there's clearly something very wrong ;) .

Not well written enough compared to earlier works and not action packed enough to compare with the pulps.

Edit: I really should have noticed from other reviews, that this is aimed at younger readers. That would have altered my review perspective a little.. but it wouldn't have changed my score.

Bunch of russian scientists go to the north pole and go through to a hollow earth scenario filled with diffrent eras of animals such as sabretooth tigers and dinosaurs. What makes it awesome, is it seems they are on a tasting safari, and do science with their stomach. Every three pages they run into a extinict animal, shoot it "like a true scientist" and eat it. Its unintentionally hysterical.

Grāmata bija ok. Kaitināja tas, ka zinātniekiem nonākot neskartā pasaules daļā, viss kas viņiem ir prātā ir nogalināt, ievākt galvaskausu un ādas paraugus, kā izsaimniekot neskarto dabu, izveidot raktuves, izvadāt dzīvniekus pa visas pasaules zooloģiskajiem dārziem utt.
Patika cīniņi ar milzīgajām skudrām un satikšanās ar pirmatnējiem cilvēkiem.
Grāmatas otrā puse lasījās raiti un ar interesi.

I read this book as a child, but I still remember how it influenced me to study (astronomy, geology, biology, physics, and chemistry) and to become a scientist - it remains, beyond any subjectivity, one of the few perfectly-written Sci-Fi books ever! I strongly recommend it! When I was invited to join this community, this was the very first book on my shelf...

A 100-year-old but plays with you like a kid. yes thats what plutonia is. A great mix of sci-fi and children's genre. The book gives you a thorough account of the discovery of the subterranean planet plutonia. The writer does his best in providing the minutest infromation regarding geology, zoology and genealogy of animals and what not... the book gets way too one-dimensional at times. At times consecutive redundant chapters make it really hard to go through it.
In plutonia the explorers find 'ice-age' and further up the 'jurassic period'.. The flora and fauna of those periods excite you. And lastly they find the pre-historic men, I was a bit disappointed there as It was quite late and the book was about to reach its end...
overall its an exciting read with some monotonous periods..

Highly disappointing (I agree with Wreade1872's review). Intended as a pretext to make known the prehistoric flora and fauna (mostly fauna), the book becomes quickly boring and repetitive, despite its writing style à la Jules Verne.

Být mi deset, dal bych o hvězdičku víc. Takhle je to bez jakékoliv nostalgie za tři. Je několik způsobů jak se na román dívat - první může být jako na horší Verneovku, která, na rozdíl od Julesových románů, nezestárla právě nejlíp a jejíž poselství je vlastně sporné. Celou dobu jsem dumal, co se mi vlastně Obručev snaží říct a nakonec jsem dospěl k závěru, že vlastně nic. Román totiž v podstatě nemá příběh, jde jen o prezentaci jednotlivých obrazů pravěké přírody, které jsou čtenáři předkládány v jistém chronologickém uspořádání. Bohužel se však rychle začne velice rychle opakovat, protože Obručev buď zas tak hlubké znalosti neměl, anebo je jednoduše neměl k dispozici, protože v jeho době ještě nebyly objeveny. Člověku, který se alespoň stopově zajímá o moderní paleontologii, bude už jeho výběr zástupců pravěké flory připadat přinejmenším úsměvný. Druhý způsob je dívat se na román jako na zajímavý exkurz do literární i myšlenkové minulosti. Celkem by mě zajímalo, jestli knihu znali Karel Zeman a J.A. Novotný, když psali scénář k Cestě do pravěku, protože když už ne přímo scény, tak alespoň náměty (plavba po řece, jejíž proud plyne nazpět časem) jsou zde téměř totožné. Kde jsou však Zemanovi klukovští hrdinové mírumilovnými pozorovateli, kteří si vystačí s mladistvým úžasem, přistupují Obručevovy postavy (a záměrně říkám postavy, protože na jakékoliv rozlišení z hlediska charakterů můžete zapomenout) k netknutému pravěkému světu s arogancí bílých konkvistadorů, kteří zcela automaticky střílejí na všechno, co se kolem nich pohne. Být mi deset, miloval bych Burianovy ilustrace i rádoby děsivé výjevy, slyšel bych vřeštění ptakoještěrů a šplouchání plesiosaurů. Bohužel už mi deset není.

Najprv som bol troška skeptický - kniha z päťdesiatych rokov, dobrodružstvo... neznelo to kvalitne, poviem to úprimne. Avšak mal som chuť na niečo akčné, ľahké a neznáme. Kniha sedela niekoľko rokov v mojej knižnici, vyzerala ošumelo a opustene, tak som sa jej chopil. Dobre som spravil.

Na začiatku som sa zarazil, že sa začína v roku 1914, teda pred revolúciami v Rusku - žeby to bolo nejak v diele odzrkadlené (?), ma mátalo, no nebolo, vôbec. A vôbec nebolo cítiť, že je to kniha, ktorá vyšla v Sovietskom Rusku - žiaden náznak propagandy! Ale poďme ďalej...

Ako som sa vytešoval dejom, natrafil som na princíp dutej zeme - pomyslel som si: och, len to nie, konšpirácie, dristy a pod. Snažil som sa rozpomenúť, kedy sa veda začala seriózne zaoberať vnútrom našej Zemegule a do akej miery je táto kniha inovatívna, iná. Veľmi sa mi podobala na J. Verna, no nie úplne, ale veď čo dobrodružné sa na neho nepodobá, že? Musím dodať, že som k nej pristupoval moc kriticky a preto som sa po sto stranách rozhodol prečítať doslov o autorovi a knihe.

Zistil som, že Obručev bol geológ a učiteľ, ktorý sa rozhodol týmto spôsobom predstaviť mladým dejiny našej zeme - jednotlivé geologické obdobia so všetkým, čo k tomu patrí. A toto zistenie dalo knihe úplne iný nádych. Fascinovala ma a tešil som sa z každej stránky. Ešte stále cítim ako mi vietor fúka do tváre sneh, ako zostupujem s hrdinami do "kráteru", ako sa plavíme po riekach a lovíme všakovakú zver... Viem si predstaviť ako ju nahlas čítam svojim deťom, hehe.

Written by a Russian scientist as a way to teach by leading people through the geologic epochs as part of an adventure story. Wonderful depictions of the creatures in their natural surroundings. As they travel they experience different ages of the earth. It was written in 1924 so some of the information is very out of date but accurate as far as the geology and ecological interactions go.

Go ahead and meet the adventures

This work is rightfully considered one of the most interesting that are devoted to the so-called "hollow Earth" theme. The author masterfully shows a world completely different from ours, where those forms of life that have long since sunk into oblivion in our world are possible.
Obruchev's novel is addictive from the first pages. Probably, it affects the interest in the unknown, which appears in the image of distant lands somewhere out there among the snows and ice, where an ordinary person cannot reach. Here, the reader gets the opportunity. He can "see" these lands thanks to the excellent description of the author. Excellent pictures of nature, various interesting everyday trifles of a traveler-seeker — all this is given to the author to glory, and we, the readers, are drawn with a general picture of what is happening.
Obruchev chooses the optimal pace of narration. He is in no hurry, but at the same time he does not pour water. The development is gradual, dragging readers page by page. The material is presented correctly. The language is quite simple, and that makes the work easy to read. And of course, the author pays special attention to the scientific justification of the events in the book, which gives the work even more weight.
Obruchev describes very interestingly the new and wonderful world that appears before the heroes when they find themselves on the other side of the Earth. Detailed stories about everything that is happening allow you to vividly imagine the world into which the characters of the work have fallen. I consider the author's strong point to be the ability to describe the world around him so competently and interestingly in his works. Plutonia was no exception.
The author shows well how much a person becomes a beast when he gets into the animal world. Here, in this new world, there is a well-known principle of wildlife: you either survive by killing yourself, or you will die from a more powerful species. But the heroes of "Plutonia" are not going to become easy prey. As has long been known, man is the most terrifying predator. And in this new world, discoverers manifest themselves as such. Obruchev, on the other hand, shows with a sufficient degree of realism how people behave in front of the fear of death, not hesitating in their expressions and actions in order to save their lives.
"Plutonium" is without a doubt an important milestone in fantasy literature. The work allows you to look with sufficient confidence at the true nature of people who strive to open new horizons for humanity, while remaining the dominant species on the planet.
The author offers readers a large scientific base, sharing in detail many interesting things from the world of science that will also be useful to readers of any age. This makes the work not only fantastic and interesting, but also allows you to gain some knowledge from geology, geography and biology, which may well be useful.
I also liked the finale of the work, which leaves a lot of questions. It is presented so realistically and shows how much war is "more interesting" to people than new discoveries, that you can't help but imagine the place where researchers entered Plutonium. In your mind, this place really exists and for some reason you expect that one day they will announce that a new world has finally been found. Everything that happened is described in the work so realistically and interestingly.
Perhaps Obruchev shows his finale with the idea that the events could well have taken place, but due to many factors they never reached the masses due to the circumstances that happened. And somewhere out there, quite possibly, a new wonderful world is still waiting for a real discovery, which is strikingly different from ours and will definitely show another life.

The book of the distinguished Siberian geologist, "Plutonia" describes a fantastic world, which lies under the earth's crust, describing the geological periods of the formation of this planet. The story is similar to V. Kaverin, written in the same patriotic Soviet style, even if the action takes place a year before the start of the First World War. The literary work is similar to two other important works of the underground world, one written by Jules Verne "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and the second, written by the British Arthur Conan Doyle "A Lost World", but in "Plutonia" the description ends a a much more scientific shade.
Thus, the narrative brings to the fore a team of explorers who set out for the extreme North on board a research vessel "Steaua Polara" initially to confirm the land of the Severnaia Zemlea islands, then the discovery of a depression-type passage, with inexplicable phenomena like the Triangle Bermuda, takes 6 explorers deep into the geological eras; each being explained during the discovery as a story aimed at the young audience. After the successful return of the crew and the celebration of the discovery of an inner land of Earth (known in the literature and conspiracy collections as Agartha or Middle Earth), it is plundered and looted by an Austro-Hungarian cruiser, "Ferdinand", who informs them of the outbreak the war. Unlike the work "Two Captains" by Kaverin, this book does not have an equally victorious ending, or the victory of these Russian explorers is due to the concealment of the discovery of the new land, so after the war and the Bolshevik Revolution, they cannot be found. The beginning and the end of the book are clearly anchored in science, that is, the author is sure of what he narrates, being by far taken as a geologist specialist, for no other reason, but he was also crowned with the Stalin Prize, in 1941, as the highest Soviet distinction in literature . The book is full of geological and geographical references, explained in great detail by the author.
As for the middle of the book, it contains the unfolding of the action and the discovery of the new land inside a vast depressed plain. The narration of this content may seem a little puerile (at least read after the heavy works of Stanislaw Lem or the Strugatki brothers), in the idea that Obrucev used the phrase and short sentences, precisely to grab the youth, but the image he gives you in imaginary is special.
However, in my opinion, I would take this book as a fantastic work, it being a little different from a SF novel I have read, it is still suitable for adults, or at least for those who are a bit more curious about deciphering the bowels of the Earth.
The purpose of the book is well printed among the lines of the author "it will be an exhortation for Soviet youth to take a closer interest in geology and that it will contribute to attracting new labor forces to study this interesting being".

Цікаву філософську думку можна почути у автора на початку роману, висловлену майже сто років тому. Про Аляску, що вже тоді не давала спокою росіянським мужикам:

— Прощай, колишня російська земля, дорогоцінність, подарована американцям.
— Як це? — здивувався Боровий. — Скільки я пригадую, наш уряд продав Сполученим Штатам цю похмуру країну.
— Так, продав за сім мільйонів доларів. А чи знаєте ви, скільки янкі вже виручили з цієї похмурої країни?
— Ну, стільки ж або, може, вдвоє!
— Ви жорстоко помиляєтесь! Самого золота вони вивезли з Аляски на двісті мільйонів доларів. А крім золота, ще цілком не вичерпаного, там є срібло, мідь, олово і кам’яне вугілля, що його починають видобувати. Далі хутро, великі ліси по Юкону. Будують залізницю, Юконом ходять пароплави.
— Ну, нам жалкувати нема чого! — зауважив Труханов. — У нас і Аляска залишилася б у такому первісному стані, як Чукотська земля, де теж є і золото, і вугілля, і хутро, а пуття від усього цього ніякого..

І далі ще кілька абзаців про ненависних американців. Вже скільки років минуло — а діалог цей актуальності не втратив у жодному з ракурсів - як своєму ради до цих пір дати не можуть, так і на чуже не перестають зазіхати, клята недоімперія. Вже за це можна автору бал набавити 🙂.

В іншому - добротний пригодницький роман досить схожий на інший роман автора — Землю Саннікова. Все та ж подорож на слабко досліджену північ, відкриття невідомої землі та реліктових її жителів, зокрема первісних людей. Більше того, кінцівка, результат експедиції, і та схожа — все та ж істинна десь поряд.

І сюжет, і стиль оповіді, набір пригод, герої, яких можна вільно поміняти і перетасувати між собою, без зміни для вражень від книги, настільки вони добре й індивідуально виписані — все ріднить ці два твори. Одне, що їх дещо відрізняє, то це шість відважних дослідників, які за кілька місяців 😮 примудрилися не лише відкрити, а й мало не повністю дослідити новий відкритий світ. Таких би бравих хлопців, свого часу, на відкриття Америки відправити — ото б вони діл накрутили! І треба врахувати, що тут дія відбувається не в якійсь там невинній савані населеній буйволами, тут справжній Парк Юрського періоду, з динозаврами, підводними монстрами та мурахами у висоту по пояс людині. Кумедно, але на відміну від того-таки «парку», тут ніякої жахачки не відбувається, тут браві москальські мужики бадьоро прокрокували і пропливли кілька таких парків, немов гуляючи в ботанічному саду — навіть собачка, що їх супроводжувала, не покалічилася 😏.

Але трохи повагавшись, оцінив таки у 8 балів, оскільки цільовій, підлітковій, аудиторії має бути цікавіше ніж мені тепер. Хоча принцип: стріляємо у все, що рухається, потім обмірюємо — у сучасному світі мене дещо коробить, особливо 2 повністю винищені сімейства реліктових мурах... (у Землі Саннікова ця хижа риса героїв автора була ще набагато яскравішою, так що довелося «Землю» оцінити на бал нижче).

Una historia inspirada en dos hermosos clásicos de aventura como son Viaje Al Centro de la Tierra y El Mundo Perdido pero tal como lo dice el autor en la introducción, le dió un toque más científico a su historia.
Las partes positivas son: El viaje en sí, los descubrimientos que realiza la expedición y las aventuras que les tocan vivir, son originales y entretenidas, sobretodo el encuentro con ciertos seres que le dan un buen dolor de cabeza a estos intrépidos científicos.

Las partes negativas: Demasiadas descripciones y detalles que hacen perder el ritmo de la aventura, se estanca en dar detalles de la morfología de los animales, de la estructura de las rocas, demasiada información que sobrecargó la acción.

Por otro lado, odie que fuera pura matanza, fue más un safarí de cacería, que el descubrimiento y estudio de las especies que se encontraban, un bebé iguanadon... boom... desmembrarlo, desollarlo... comer la carne... un pterodáctilo... boom.. desmembrarlo, desollarlo... comer la carne... y esa secuencia se repitió para cada animal encontrado, no disfrutabas el viaje, no disfrutabas los descubrimientos, fue una simple y llana masacre rodeada de información, así que en lo personal, fue una tortura terminarlo.

En la parte final del libro, se habla durante varias hojas de las hipótesis que le llevó al que organizó la expedición en creer que el interior de la tierra era hueco, y basicamente nombra teoría tras teoría con sus aciertos y desaciertos, que terminan por lograr que el lector se duerma.

Un intento de acercar la ciencia a los lectores mediante un viaje de aventuras pero que en mi caso no me terminó convenciendo.

Plutonia es una novela escrita por Vladimir Obruchev, en 1915. Se trata de un texto de ciencia ficción cuya temática es la de la tierra hueca. Los protagonistas descubren un mundo subterráneo donde existen ríos, lagos y volcanes, donde crece una extraña vegetación y donde habitan animales monstruosos (por ejemplo, animales jurásicos como dinosaurios) y seres humanos primitivos. Este mundo tiene su propio sol (un astro central llamado Plutón) y se conecta con el mundo exterior a través de un agujero en el hielo Ártico. Obruchev era él mismo un geólogo y se especializaba en el estudio del territorio siberiano. Esto lo llevó a ser reclutado como asesor en la construcción del ferrocarril Trans-siberiano. Fue a partir de este trabajo que tuvo la ocasión de recorrer tanto el desierto de Karakum como el valle del río Uzboj, en Turkmenistán.

It is a Great menagerie adventure book through time. Spoilers to come. I enjoyed the giant land sloth, the dinosaurs, and other extinct animals. The only part that through me off was the only conflict was with giant ants. Giant ants. It felt like it was an inspiration for the movie "THEM!" but in an older time frame. Ants would have taken over that whole land at the size the author created. All else was a blast from the past.

Uno de los escritores rusos que mejor supo trasladar el espíritu de la ciencia ficción de finales del XIX principios del XX en el ámbito soviético fue Vladimir A. Obruchev (1863-1956). Este hombre de un talento excepcional era, además de escritor de novelas de ficción científica, un reputado geólogo y explorador de Siberia y Asia Central. Sus conocimientos posibilitaron el descubrimiento de nuevos yacimientos de metales preciosos en zonas hasta entonces no explotadas. Fue también uno de los científicos más galardonados por la Academia Soviética de Ciencias. Obruchev es el autor de dos novelas poco conocidas en Occidente y que beben directamente del Viaje al centro de la Tierra de Julio Verne y del Mundo Perdido de Arthur Conan Doyle. Para quien no recuerde el argumento, diremos que a grandes rasgos relataban el descubrimiento de un mundo paralelo (subterráneo en el caso de Verne y situado en medio de la jungla sudamericana en Doyle) donde convivían dinosaurios y homínidos prehistóricos. Estos relatos de evasión fueron los que utilizó Obruchev para hacer dos de sus obras: Plutonia (escrita en 1915 pero no publicada hasta 1924) y La tierra de Sannikov (1926) [2].

Оставляю в стороне в целом простительные для эпохи Обручева расизм (присутствующий, но не слишком буйный) и какое-то совершенно необузданное желание подстрелить и съесть все, что можно подстрелить и съесть.

Сам автор признает, что книга задумана не столько научно-фантастическая, скольно научно-популярная. И это заметно очень хорошо по подробным и увлекательным описаниям начала экспедиции, приемов и инструментов, применяемых ее участниками. Роман действительно познавательный и, если сбросить со счетов некоторые ошибки (типа старых заблуждений о неандертальцах и совершенно патриархальной карикатуры первобытного "матриархата"), даже информативный.

Вместе с этим, работа часто не удерживается на грани развлекательного и познавательного и скатывается в довольно печальные отрезки похождений по Плутонии, с неестественными диалогами, полными избыточных деталей, и монотоностью, даже цикличностью повествования.

Read this when I was 11, and, with a few of my friends, loved it! Picked up a copy over 30 years later and it still had a sense of wonder.
