From 1940 to 1973 the United States used a device called the draft to ensure that individuals would participate in military service. This was very unpopular, and many people objected to being drafted against their wishes into military service. Katherine “Kat” Martin is a nursing student in college long after 1973 and is drafted into service. She didn’t request this, nor was she ever given a chance to reject it.
She is assigned to a master to learn a trade that completely disrupts her life. While continuing to work toward completing her nursing program, situations arise that create barriers to that effort as well in her life as she knew it.
She has now lived one year in this precarious new lifestyle of hers. She begins her second year in this position with very little support and witnessing many things that a college student was never intended to see. Her support for what she does is retired and only available on the phone in an after-the-fact role.
What is even worse, none of her friends know what she does nor can she tell them. They all question almost everything she does, and she is not able to explain to them why she is doing these things.
