Chemistry AS Level and A Level

Rate this book
Chemistry: AS Level and A Level clearly separates AS and A Level material, making this book suitable for both courses. Activities such as chapter learning objectives, questions through the text and end-of-chapter exercises encourage independent learning. The material is suitable for all students, including those for whom English is a second language.

This is a decent enough book if you are studying for the AS and A2 qualification in Chemistry and are taking the Cambridge International Board certification.

It was published in 2004, so you might imagine that it is starting to feel a little out of date in 2010 with all the changes that have happened in curricula in the past 6 years. It doesn't for the most part, but there are some fairly big gaps. As an example, it doesn't cover Unit 11, which amounts to about 10% of the course. Some of the Chemistry content for that unit can be spun into other areas if the teacher works at it, but the more biological content (DNA, proteins etc.) that's needed for that unit isn't really covered in this book.

Consequently my message to both students and teachers would be that they shouldn't totally rely on this textbook to cover everything, and make an effort to try and understand some of the (increasingly large) gaps that are appearing between the CIE course and this old textbook (if they decide to use it).
