This is a fantastic collection of essays about black culture in the 20th century and how its novelists, poets, musicians, singers, and actors engaged in resistance against racism and the broader fight for freedom in the United States.

Music fans and Jazz fans, in particular, should read this book too as there is great stuff on Bird, Billie Holiday, Dizzy, Miles, Coltrane, a terrific interview with Archie Shepp and the must read essay "The Politics of Max Roach".

Fascinating throughout and deeply stimulating. An amazing book.
