Kagetora, a young and talented ninja, is serving a famous family of accomplished martial artists . . . but not as a bodyguard. Instead, he will tutor the heir to the family fortune, the sweet but awkward Yuki. Kagetora soon finds himself falling in love with his charge–the ultimate dishonor for a ninja.
Kagetora’s life becomes even more complicated when his childhood friend and fellow ninja Sakuya arrives. She intends to get close to her longtime crush, which complicates the already tangled situation between Kagetora and Yuki. And then a trip to Kagetora’s hometown threatens to reveal his past–and his true feelings!
This volume was much better than the first. I like the direction that the story is going. It still feels very episodic to me, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. It is cute and funny and I am happy to see some much needed improvements from the first volume. Cannot wait to continue!
Yes, it is much better. Huh.
The second volume was a definite improvement over the first. I think that the creator wasn't pushing so hard to establish the characters and had figured out what story to tell. By the second volume, it has become a very sweet romantic comedy, with a love triangle...but with ninjas. The Christmas story in particular was very well done, a high point of the book. Another was the ghost story sequence. The end notes provide some very interesting bits of Japanese culture, ranging from ninja weaponry to "scare yourself silly" games. After volume 1, I wasn't sure I would read volume 2. After volume 2, the improvement was enough that I will take a look at volume 3, to see if the changes continue. At the very least, now I can understand why Del Rey published it, and that wasn't clear from volume 1.
Kagetora: Volume 2 is another fun book in the Kagetora series. I especially liked when the main characters got out of Tokyo and traveled to Kagetora's village.
Once again, the writing is pleasurable and fresh and the artwork is wonderful. The translation is very good and the story is highly entertaining. The tension between Kagetora and Yuki is growing and she is finally realizing that she likes him. It goes without saying that he likes her, but can do nothing about it as he is sworn to protect her. Throw in another girl that has always liked Kagetora, and you have the makings of trouble . . . big trouble.
Overall, I highly enjoyed Kagetora: Volume 2 and recommend this series for anyone who is thinking about picking up a new manga series to read. I am looking forward to reading about these two in Kagetora: Volume 3.
