It's a shame that Treasure Planet didn't perform well in its initial run because it's actually a great Disney movie. As a fan of the film, I had to hunt down this art book which is very rare and expensive to come by, but I don't regret what I paid for it.
While compared to other Disney art books, it's rather light (and paperback for that matter) - there was sufficient behind-the-scenes info to somewhat satisfy my curiosity... as well as a lot of great art.
There are so many missed opportunities in this book though... so much art that must've been left out... I was left a little wanting.
A completely awesome read to go with an underappreciated film. Treasure planet managed to do what many films before it tried to do without much success, merge animation with digital effects. This book takes you through that union with some breathtaking pictures that you'll fall in love with if you loved the film.
One of the most interesting "Art of," books I've read. The text is mostly skippable, but the evolution of the artwork to the finished product is truly fascinating.
"Treasure Planet: A Voyage of Discovery" is an amazing inside look at the making of one of the best modern animated Disney films, "Treasure Planet". If you were a huge fan of the movie, this is a must-have. The film creators take the story to a whole new level, filling in with details left out of the movie, and they also reveal the intriguing 70/30 art design that was used throughout the movie (70% 18th century, 30% science fiction) with beautiful paintings, movie stills, rough animation frames, and more! With detailed character descriptions, in-depth story fill-ins, and incredible illustrations, this is a must read if you are a fan of Disney and animation. It is just the right length; not too long (it may take a day or two to read) but long enough that you feel it was worth money!) You will find yourself flipping through it again and again to admire the delightful illustrations. Two thumbs way up!
I liked this movie and tought it should have done better at the box office. A fascinating look at the work and thinking that went into making this movie. I also learned some interesting tidbits on Howard Pyle that I did not know.
Great bunch of sketches and inspiration along with extensive descriptions. You learn even more about the environment and character's histories by reading this book.
