Since her traumatic experience where she was trapped in the form of her wolf, Gwen has struggled to control the beast within and the Deep Magic- forbidden magic- that calls to her. Her people shun the use of Deep Magic and Gwen knows that she can never be worthy of leading her people when she can’t control the chaos within her. Not that she wants to anyway but it is her destiny. Gwen may not be able to be what her brother and her grandfather need her to be but she can help, even if the answer goes against everything she has been taught.
Marcus is a Roman is new country, trying to find his place in the world as a smithy rather than a soldier. His father is loving but he is lonely. He can’t stop thinking about the wolf girl he helped saved. Can’t stop imagining how lovely she was and how much he wanted her for himself. When that wolf girl appears, looking for his services to craft a magical sword, he at first wishes to turn her down. His distrust of magic has never been a secret but he can’t deny himself the time spent in her company.
She may never truly he his, promised to another and her birthright in a place where he- being unmagical and Roman- cannot follow but he finds it harder and harder to tell himself that truth. He is the only one who does not fear her wolf, Gwen herself included and in order to keep her as his wife, he must look within himself for the answers and be willing to do everything he once turned away from to save her.
This book I found to be rather dull and boring. It wasn’t horrible, though the plot itself was kinda simple and not much happened for the majority of it outside of the two main characters screwing in all sorts of places around the farm. The bulk of the plot was driven by the supporting characters leaving little to no character development for Gwen or Marcus. The main villain was absent in the storyline for Gwen and Marcus though his constant pressure on Avalon meant the supporting characters had to deal with him. Leaving Gwen to torment over her use of Deep Magic and the wolf that she fears is getting more and more powerful. I didn’t NOT like this book but neither was I overly impressed or invested in anything that was going on.

Gwen is a Druidess sworn to protect the land of Avalon from all who would do them harm. I’ve been a fan of Joy Nash ever since I read Celtic Fire a few years ago and I was eager to read her latest book, Deep Magic. Everything I’ve come to expect from her stories is once again found here. Passionate love stories, powerful magic, danger and intrigue, wounded souls, redemption – Deep Magic has it all. Here Joy Nash even delves into the beginnings of another story I’ve always loved, that of Excalibur.
Gwen has been deeply scarred by her imprisonment (detailed in The Grail King) and has yet to recover. Deep Magic has a strong hold on her soul and even her beloved twin brother Rhys cannot help her resist the allure of such raw power, forbidden though it is. The only one who can help her is Marcus, though she does not understand their bond. Marcus cannot get Gwen out of his mind so when she suddenly appears at his door, he wonders if his dreams have been fulfilled, at the same time he fights the passion between them.
The villain Strabo is evil and cruel, warped by obsession and his own tampering with Deep Magic. His desire to conquer Avalon is very hazy in the beginning until his story begins to unfold, where we discover secrets that will change the way Gwen sees Deep Magic and its danger forever. His ties to the Druids are shocking to say the least and as I began to suspect the true nature of his role in the book, I could not put it down, waiting to see what surprise would next be revealed.
If you are a fan of powerful magic and compelling romance in your stories to read, then Deep Magic is a book for you. I just finished reading Joy Nash's DEEP MAGIC and loved it. She has a knack for making her paranormal elements seem entirely plausible within the framework of the venerable Arthurian legend. I totally bought the shape-shifting and magic she wove into her tale. DEEP MAGIC borrows the best aspects of historical and paranormal--a deft marriage of both.
I think what makes it work so well is that her paranormal elements are so intrinsic to the characters. They believe so deeply I have to as well. Joy does a brilliant job of pitting Light and Dark spiritual powers against each other along with the inscrutable DEEP MAGIC that no mortal can wield with certainty of the outcome. Her story works in all the worlds.
