A Short History of Sociological Thought

This text offers an account of the rise of sociological thought from its origins in the 18th century. Beginning with the classical sociology of Marx, Durkheim, Weber and Simmel, it goes on to examine paradigms of functionalism, interactionism, structuralism and critical Marxism, and ends by discussing salient 1990s sociological theory, including the theories of Foucault, Baudrillard, Giddens, Habermas and others. It critically engages with sociological theory throughout its development, offering students a path through competing traditions and perspectives that brings out the distinctive value and limitations of these.

I learned some things from it. But it was a slow, dense read. Much denser than it should have been for a "short history". The writing could've been better, I feel. The meat was there, but the information struggled to get out. At a fundamental level, editing would have helped; there were commas missing, and inappropriate commas, that made sentences less clear than they could have been. There were sentences that were confusing for other reasons.

Don’t carried away by the title. It’s a not a short introduction to sociological thought. Rather a rich , dense and often hard reading on the history of sociological thinking. The author presupposes that the reader knows the basics of sociology, it’s concepts, and major figures. But a brilliant piece though.

A Short History of Sociological Thought বইটি আমি বেশ কিছুদিন যাবৎ revise করার তালে ছিলাম। সুযোগ পেয়ে গেলাম গতকাল সকালে।

সমাজতত্ত্বের জন্মকালীন ইতিহাস কোনও অর্থেই নগন্য নয়। মধ্যযুগের শেষভাগে পাশ্চাত্যে চিন্তার জগতে ও সাংস্কৃতিক ক্ষেত্রে এমন কিছু যুগান্তকারী ব্যাপারস্যাপার ঘটে , এবং এমন কিছু আর্থ-সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক পরিবর্তনের ধারা সূচিত হয়, যার মাধ্যমে বিধিবদ্ধ সমাজতত্ত্বের পঠনপাঠনের সূচনা ঘটে। সমাজতত্ত্বের ব্যাপক অনুশীলন ইওরোপে শুরু হয়েছিল অষ্টাদশ শতাব্দীর প্রারম্ভে এনলাইটেনমেন্টের সময়। এই বইটিতে লেখক ইওরোপীয় নবজাগরণ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বিপ্লবের ভূমিকা থেকে শুরু করে আলোচনা করেছেন বিভিন্ন Sociological Masters - দের চিন্তাধারার উদ্ভব ও বিকাশ নিয়ে। সেখানে যেমন আছে August Comte - এর প্রত্যক্ষবাদ ও সামাজিক স্থিতিবিদ্যা ও গতিবিদ্যা , Herbert Spenser - এর বিবর্তনবাদ ও জৈবিক সাদৃশ্যবাদ , তেমনই আছে Durkheim , Max Weber ও Karl Heinrich Marx - এর সমাজতাত্ত্বিক চিন্তার বিধৃত রূপরেখা।

এই বইয়ের রচনাগুলির মধ্যে জিজ্ঞাসু পাঠক বিচ্ছিন্ন ভাবে পেয়ে যাবেন চিন্তার নানা উপাদান। এই বইকে সমাজতত্ত্বের একটি ক্ল্যাসিকের মর্য্যাদা দেওয়া হয়। পড়ে দেখতে পারেন।

A simply brilliant intro to sociological theory. Although quite traditional in its choice of theorists and currents, the books is very lucid in its discussions and includes helpful pointers to critiques as well. Too bad it hasn't been updated since 2000, which means there's very little about the online revolution, for example. Nevertheless, a good read even for more seasoned sociologists.

Only read Part II, dealing with Modern Sociology. Proved a clear and engaging introduction although I could of done with some more practical application of the theories discussed to really grasp their implications.

An older book but a good academic overview of some of the key sociological thinkers. The author experiments with some rather bizarre sentence structures!
