Richard Laymon was born in Chicago and grew up in California. He earned a BA in English Literature from Willamette University, Oregon and an MA from Loyola University, Los Angeles. He worked as a schoolteacher, a librarian, and a report writer for a law firm, and was the author of more than thirty acclaimed novels.
He also published more than sixty short stories in magazines such as Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock, and Cavalier, and in anthologies including Modern Masters of Horror.
He died from a massive heart attack on February 14, 2001 (Valentine's Day).
Another qucik 'Fastback' series read by Laymon. This was an interesting twist on a story of 2 men repossessing a Hearse to find a coffin in the back. Knowing Laymon I was read for the 'vampire' to arrive, but it went in a different direction which was pretty cool. Again, way too short, but an ok read. (Also, I'm glad to find out this "Guts" and "The Herse" are the same book, as these Fastback books are way over priced!)
The story of Tom who is a first time Repo Man. His first assignment is to repo a Hearse. Classic Laymon scenario and the tension is built quickly in this short tale. The twist is fun and definitely suited to the young audience of the story.
