An Intellectual & Cultural History of the Western World 1

Rate this book
s/t: From the Earliest Times Through the Middle Ages
This is not a book for anyone seeking an easy road to superficial knowledge of the history of modern European thought and culture. It is a careful and thoughtful and scholarly approach to the events and trends that have formed the groundwork for current thought. It is almost incredible that, within six months one man (aided by specialists in fields of art, music and literature) could publish a book like this and his Economic History of the Western World (Harcourt, Brace), and have each of them a challenge to lazy thought, a scholarly contribution to a definitive approach to current problems and their historical bases. Text book for colleges.--Kirkus

A classic text that provides a thorough survey of the ideas of Western civilization in an orderly form. The author uses a chronological format to trace and evaluate the advances in both ideas and the culture surrounding those ideas. This is the first of three volumes in which man's achievement over the centuries is explored. A valuable reference and resource for any readers who continue to explore the great literature and art of all ages.

Although the title reads as somewhat pompous or else intimidating I found it to be a wonderful source of collective thought that sometimes guided, occasionally reminded and often instructed me in the foundations of my history as a European, and was for 20 odd years a companion I referred to regularly as a source and revision. Covering events, places, the arts, philosophies, architecture and many other milestones I have always loved this book (in 3 volumes) and recommend it to anyone starting off on their adventure of wanting to find out about ourselves and the influences that surround us.
