Text-to-Self Connection

The Statue of Liberty is a fun informational book that teaches children historical facts about the Statue of Liberty. I chose this book as a text to self connection because I am a native New Yorker and reading this book reminds me of my childhood. When I was in elementary school we would take field trips to tour the Statue of Liberty. It was such an amazing experience! During our American symbols unit I would have my students choose their favorite American symbol, draw a picture of it and write an informational piece that includes at least three facts they have learned about their chosen symbol.

To be honest it is a little light on content and not the strongest written book of my Statue of Liberty collection, but it is my go to because it includes measurements. One of my favorite activities is "how many kindergarten feet/fingernails/eyes/noses are in one Statue of Liberty?" and this book pairs super well with that activity

Colorful non-fiction at a late 1st to 2nd grade reading level. Just enough text to not be intimidating. Includes facts about the statue's history, cost, and size, including a diagram listing lengths of its eye, nose, fingernails, etc. I will look for more books in this American Symbols series.

Interesting, simple read about the history behind The Statue of Liberty. This would be great for a research paper on the Statue as it gives lots of dimensions, facts and history.
