This book deals with an area of religious and social history which no previous writer has attempted to investigate. Consequently it supplements the standard works on American Quakerism by writers like R. M. Jones, or F. S. Turner, which do not deal with the Society of Friends in Canada. This work therefore fills a decided gap in the religious and social history of Canada which is relatively unknown. It also contains valuable geneo-logical data relating to many Quaker pioneer families in this country.
A first edition of this study-entitled A History of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in Canada-was published over forty-one years ago. It is now out of print and traced developments only as far as 1927. But since that time many new developments have occurred, notably the union of the three branches of Friends in Canada which healed the separations of an earlier period. In this new edition— entitled The Quakers in Canada-certain parts of the first edition have been omitted and fresh materials have been added.

Throughout this study the development of Friends in Canada has been traced in relation to the wider Quaker community in the United States and in England. In this context Quakerism is seen as a world movement in the van of the religious and social thinking of to-day.

Those who are members of the Society of Friends will find here a fresh discussion of many problems pertinent to Quakerism; while those for whom Quakerism signifies only a quaint relic of the past will find it assume a new meaning and
