Winner of the CMI Management Book of the Year Awards in the 2012/2013 New Manager category, The Leadership Skills Handbook from best-selling author Jo Owen reveals the essential skills you need to be an effective leader. It shows you what works in practice, not in theory, in crucial areas such as people skills, career skills, mindset skills, organization skills, personal values and behaviours. Each skill is presented in a concise, easy to follow format, with an accompanying framework to help you deploy it in your own life. The skills are about the real challenges real leaders have to master, and as you observe and record real-life examples of skills in action, you will be developing your own unique formula for success in the context that matters to you. Based on research from over a thousand leaders throughout the world at all levels in the public, private and voluntary sectors, it identifies the practical skills to make you even more successful, and offers guidance on all key topics.

This completely revised fourth edition of The Leadership Skills Handbook includes brand new content on some of the most challenging skills that successful leaders need to master through three new sections on financial skills (including budgeting, costs, pricing and creating an investment case), political skills (including influencing, negotiating, networking and partnering) and the art of strategy (including strategic models, understanding the customer, marketing, pricing and advertising). This indispensable guidance will boost your confidence, technical abilities and give you the edge on your peers.

Jo is the first person to be awarded the CMI gold medal three times, for Mindset of Success; How to Manage and Leadership Skills Handbook.

He practices what he preaches as a leader: he has started seven NGOs with a collective turnover above $100million annually. He was a partner at Accenture; he started a bank, was sued for $12 billion and was the best nappy (diaper) salesman in Birmingham.

His research on leadership has taken him to the ends of the earth and resulted in Tribal Business School: what modern business can learn from traditional societies. He has worked with over 100 of the best , and a few of the worst, organisations on our planet and has interviewed everyone from spies to sportspeople as well as leaders around the world to find the essence of leadership.

His latest work is on Global Teams, which is the first book to look at the plumbing of globalisation: how global teams do and do not work.

A simple concept: 90 essential skills that one needs to be a good leader and practice good leadership, packaged in a book that has previously been well-received and has now been completely revised for this fourth edition.

It does work too. It is a simple kind of book that will attract both those who tend to read sequentially as well as those who can dip in and out, skimming their way around. The advice is practical in nature, rather than clouded in theory about what should work. You may not even agree with them all, yet they should not be so controversial. Different things can work for different people, so even if you don’t treat this as a Bible, but a generous gift of advice that has worked for many, you might not go too far wrong nor need to feel bad if you need to implement everything or don’t get along with one point.

The price is great for what you can get too! You can be picky whether 90 is a true and magic number since it sounds a lot to be ‘essential’. In any case, the advice is useful and relevant, so maybe ignore the number and just immerse yourself in what follows and review the value afterwards. It is logically organised into chapters such as people skills, organization skills and political skills. Each bit of advice takes up a page or two, so it is hardly going to tax even the most-stressed executive who may, in fact, be in dire need of a ‘skills refresh’.

All in all, a recommended guide.

I regret to say that I was disappointed of this book. I hoped to learn more which I could take with me in my leadership toolbox, for the day I find myself in some kind of leadership position. I felt the book only touched the surface on the themes it choose to lay a light on.

In the beginning the author tells the reader that he has to be smart to pick up this book. But during the book I felt that the author changed his mind, because I felt handheld during the book and it made me feel quite stupid. One of the reasons for this feeling were all the repetitions. I have a great understanding that repetition is important, but not in a book. If I want to do repetitions, I as the reader will choose when to do that and I will understand if a speaker repet what he says, as listening is a different media than reading. If the author feels the need to repeat what he has written, at least spend some time to rewrite it as it then makes more sense. Then if the reader did not understand the point the first time, he can the second.

I feel this is a type of book you could read for your first leadership course or as an introduction to a leadership mindset, but for other than this I get the feeling it is too lacking.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC, provided by the author and/or the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A few actual quotes from this book:

"Appeal to fear, greed and idleness" - seriously?! That's not a "leadership" technique, that's slimy manipulation based on people's basest feelings.

"One risk of coaching...they may have come up with a better solution than the one you had thought of. As the leader, you take responsibility for the success or failure of the team, so letting them come up with the smart ideas is 100% in your interests." Wow. So basically be wary of coaching your employees as they might outshine you, but you can still take credit for it so it's alright in the end. Just wow.

"Get all the skeletons out of the cupboard fast, so you cannot be blamed for them. Reset expectations as low as possible: it is easier to beat a low target than a high one." How VERY motivating and inspiring. UGH.

Maybe the author was trying to be funny and/or snarky for entertainment's stake, but (hopefully) people are reading this book to learn how to become better leaders and managers, not to be entertained. Pity the poor employee who works for a manager taking any of the above advice.

The good:
1. Practical tips on how to lead
2. Writing style is easy to read
3. Content is good to identify where you would need to read further

The Bad:
1. Too broad, it tried to cover too much
2. He needed more examples
3. He needed more realistic exercise
4. The book seems to cater to employees as oppose to entrepreneurs.
