At this point, the tech aspects of this book are out of date. However, there are some interesting questions to think about when planning a synchronous online experience for students. Overall, worth the read, but not a handbook for teaching synchronous online courses at this point in time.

"Though “anytime” or asynchronous modes of communication have been an empowering factor in allowing learners to transcend traditional limits of place and time, not every learning objective or need can be met in the absence of real-time human interaction." (p. 1)

"According to Chickering and Gamson (1987), good practice
1. Encourages contact between students and faculty
2. Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students
3. Encourages active learning
4. Gives prompt feedback
5. Emphasizes time on task
6. Communicates high expectations
7. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning
Evaluating an online course or program by how well it adheres to these principles
of good practice can be a productive exercise and produce useful insights into how to improve instruction" (p. 16).

"The Internet is designed for communication and collaboration, and the advent of the World Wide Web and its rapid adoption into the world of education has opened up many possibilities for enabling cooperation among students." (p. 18)

"A decision to ask learners to gather in real time online should involve consideration as to what will be accomplished while live online that could not be accomplished as or more efficiently by an asynchronous means." (p. 26)
