I really enjoyed this book, with its beautiful color plates of paintings and reproductions of pages of Leonardo's own backwards writing and diagrams. The text, while interesting and entertaining, was so badly edited that I almost took off a star. The writing looked like English wasn't the author's first language. Hey! Guys! I'll copyedit the next edition for you at competitive rates!

What is great about this book? The huge collection of high resolution images of Leonardo's paintings, drawings, notebooks, contemporary art, and photographs of architecture built during his time. This book is a great collection to have, since scanning through the pictures gives a museum experience. I found it interesting that instead of Leonardo being the center of the story, the focus was what was happening during his lifetime, and how it impacted Leonardo's life or how Leonardo interacted with those events.

however, I found the writing style disappointing. the author used long convoluted sentences too much, making me re-read the sentence to understand the meaning a few times. this hindered the flow of reading. in addition, the pictures were often placed inappropriately and captions were not placed next to them. one has to skip a few pages to find the next half of the sentence because images were inserted between pages. The page layout definitely could have been better.

Love this chronological portrayal of Leonardo Da Vinci. Many books about Leonardo are organized by category (paintings, inventions, etc), but this one steps the reader through his life by age. The color images are wonderful too.

Leonardo, the world's greatest product designer and artist - when i've just arrived in NYC it's the first exhibition i went to see at the Met - all his original works flown in from all over the world! (Bill Gates has one of the best, the sketch of the moon impact on tide) - was ecstatic - ok, the book might not be the best, (it sure is the cheapest) but it is a souvenir of that happy moment.

A beautiful "coffee table" book, it's also much more than the stunning images. Field includes plenty of fascinating information alongside Da Vinci's sketches, studies, scientific explorations and masterpieces.

So much information! Renaissance, architecture, art, technological, as well as Di Vinci's personal history are covered in this 446 page book. The photos of his writings, experiments, technical works and art are wonderful. This was well worth the read.

Interesting, detailed & very readable. Loved the loads of photographs provided, not just of his works but also of relevant places, statues, etc.
