Building on the foundations set by our popular Art Fundamentals book, Beyond Fundamentals shows artists how to take their work a step beyond techniques and mechanics. A memorable, unique image requires more than just accurate anatomy and choosing the right tools, after all! This impressive volume offers in-depth guidance on conveying mood and emotion, creating narratives, and improving your images' storytelling through composition, character details, and atmosphere. Beyond Fundamentals is an ideal book both for hobbyists and new artists wanting to add extra depth to their work, and for skilled illustrators looking for a spark of new inspiration.

The book was published in 2016, obviously before MidJourney and all other AI illustration tools that changed the landscape of drawing, especially digital art, forever. That’s why the book feels dated in its “pro tips” for Photoshop - what brush preferences to use, which numbers to set on curves, etc. But the book thrives in other, more fundamental areas: the process. Planning the picture, managing references, how to achieve mood, how to create story, the importance of character development, and the most valuable thing for me - how to deal with mistakes. I love that it presents perspectives from different artists with their unique approaches, and they all show you how they develop an image from initial idea to final product. It’s very inspiring and actually therapeutic to read how other people work and how they overcome obstacles. I’m not a painter myself, but the insights gained from this read are very powerful. I definitely recommend it to all creative people.
It is a good book, it gives u different ideas and ways of creating emotions and moods in art. But half the book it turn i little repetitive. It was usefull but not the bes book of the editorial, at least for an advance artist or creator.
