easily the worst book i've ever read
frank baldwin uses bdsm sex as a crutch for insanely inappropriate, non-consensual fantasies that literally only a middle-aged white man could have, making mimi's perspective all the more unbelievable. immersion was non-existent; not only because this world seemed to have no sexual morals or factor in consent at any point, but because both character voices seemed extremely fabricated: I wouldn't believe frank baldwin to have any insight on what a "cool, mysterious womanizer" would think like, or a meek, sexually-conservative woman looking to break out of her vanilla role, either. the only character that seemed barely realistic was the stalker/creepy guy from their boring accountant job (which, by the way, included so much mind-numbing fluff that I almost wanted to commit tax fraud in real life), because at least his actions were crazy enough for his character description.

it is also worth mentioning that frank baldwin's writing style and context choices were also extremely inappropriate and disturbed. I noticed that each time jake or mimi were mentioning sex at all, they also had to bring up some part of their or their partner's childhood in a very disturbed way. why would jake think about the woman he's in the midst of having sex with as she was when she was 16? why would mimi think back to the time when her friend was assaulted by three boys in middle school as if it were a fun, exciting, coming of age moment and think that now it was her turn as a rite of passage? these examples are only a few of the ones that made me almost lose it. these two people were pushing mid to late 20s...why are we still vividly thinking about losing or taking virginities when both parties were barely 14?????

all I have to say is those poor fictional women who had their privacy and intimacy chewed and spit out by perverted jake and delusional, naive, and quite frankly demented mimi. i feel for them all.
and it also makes so much sense that in the author's note towards the end, baldwin thanked his writing and editing staff: made up of all men.
this is a terrible, terrible book and it was the first bad book I forced myself to read to remind myself not everything I write is complete garbage, especially if it's not this.

Algemas de Seda, de Frank Baldwin, foi o primeiro livro da Coleção Muito Prazer, que começou em 2012, e ainda está sendo lançada pela editora Geração. O grau de erotismo de cada romance é representado por uma pimentinha: verde para "picante", laranja para "médio picante", e vermelha para "muito picante".
Jake Teller é um homem galanteador e charmoso; ele é uma espécie de predador, mas um predador muito paciente, não é porque uma mulher o atrai que ele logo parte pra cima, ele deixa que as coisas aconteçam, e quando a oportunidade aparece, ele consegue dar a suas parceiras o sexo mais prazeroso de suas vidas. Mas, com Jake, tudo funciona de uma maneira diferente e inesperada, ele amarra sua escolhida com faixas de seda, da maneira mais conveniente que a situação proporciona, e a leva ao limite. Ele cria tanta tensão que elas imploram pelo seu toque. Ele as leva ao limite, ao limite e além.
Mimi Lessing é uma mulher de 25 anos bonita e inteligente, que está noiva de Mark, seu primeiro e único namorado. Em uma noite durante um jogo entre duas faculdades, um amigo seu, por engano, a agarra e a olha nos olhos com um olhar selvagem e sensual. Mesmo que tenha sido um acidente, e que ela esteja noiva, e que o rapaz que fez isso seja marido de sua cunhada; Mimi percebe que a eletricidade que sentiu era algo que não sentia faz tempo. Percebe que sua vida sexual não a satisfaz mais como antes; as relações que tem com seu noivo, começam sempre do mesmo jeito, acontecem sempre do mesmo jeito, e terminam sempre do mesmo jeito. Como se fosse um roteiro a ser seguido.
Teller e Lessing se conhecem através do trabalho, os dois são contadores. Desde a primeira vez que eles são apresentados percebemos uma atração, ainda não muito forte. Como já falei, as coisas acontecem de maneira sútil e ao mesmo tempo surpreendente. Não é como em alguns romances que o casal se conhece, e na primeira oportunidade estão se agarrando como dois animais. Nesse romance o leitor percebe como e porquê as coisas estão acontecendo. Através de um olhar que é dirigido de certa forma, e que transparece certa ânsia por alguma coisa; um diálogo que muda de tom.
Depois de conhecê-la, e se encantar, Jake a convida para assistir suas sessões de sexo, tortura e prazer...
A história é narrada pela visão de Jake, Mimi e... O Observador. O último é responsável pelo suspense do livro. Foi interessante termos três pontos de vista. Para Teller, o que ele faz é incrível, satisfatório, glorioso, de fazer o sangue ferver; para Lessing assistir à tudo aquilo é excitante e desorientador; e para o Observador é algo sujo, imoral, impróprio e escandaloso.
Uma coisa que não me agrada muito nos livros (principalmente românticos), é o adultério. E é uma coisa que tem de sobra nesse romance. Esses livros acabam, as vezes de maneira não intencional, nos fazendo aceitar que tudo bem trair marido ou namorado (a), se o seu desejo for muito forte.
E eu simplesmente não aceito isso.
Quando se está comprometido com uma pessoa, em um relacionamento monogâmico, a fidelidade deve existir. Se não estiver feliz, converse. Se não tiver jeito, termine. Trair um sentimento que é puro e verdadeiro, por uma prazer que você acha que precisa achar, é algo indesculpável. Mas, mesmo assim, creio que seja perdoável.
Um ótimo exemplo de adultério na literatura, é o genial livro O Primo Basílio, de Eça de Queirós, onde a protagonista, Luísa, acredita que para ser plenamente feliz no casamento, ela tem que ter um amante. E que só assim poderá viver um grande amor. Ideia que acabou levando-a a se relacionar com seu primo; relacionamento clandestino que quando foi descoberto, acabou culminando em sua morte.
Livros românticos (geralmente são direcionados para o público feminino), que mostram mulheres traindo seus maridos ou namorados, e sobre como mentir para o tal é excitante, e como elas saem vitoriosas em suas escapadas é muito chato de se ler. Eu sei que coisas assim acontecem, e que muitos saem "impunes". Mas, por favor, conte-nos histórias de casais que estejam comprometidos apenas um com o outro!
Outro ponto negativo do livro, são os flashes. Alguns são extremamente maçantes; e não entendi o porquê daquelas explicações. Talvez o motivo tenha sido esse: explicações. Mas não justificaram nada. Porque não tinham o quê justificar. Foram partes desnecessárias. Algumas vezes quando chegava num capítulo que eu via que era um flash, dava vontade de pular e vir logo para o 'presente'.
Independentemente disso, devo pontuar algo que achei muito interessante no contexto geral dessa obra: o sexo nesse romance é apresentado como um um... Ultrapassador de barreiras. Não apenas tabus sexuais, mas o consciente e inconsciente de cada um. As partes mais eróticas do livro são em momentos puramente psicológicos. E nós vemos como isso começa a afetar Mimi, como afeta Jake, e as mulheres que ele seduz e leva pra cama. Em vários momentos eu me perguntei: "Caramba, como será que eu reagiria se fizessem isso comigo?”.
O desfecho foi... Legal. Esperava outra coisa... E me surpreendi. E, sinceramente, não de uma maneira muito positiva. Em vez de nos ter dado aqueles flashes, Baldwin deveria ter explicado melhor o 'presente'. Falado mais sobre o Observador.
Enfim, o livro é recomendável. Tem voyeurismo, bondage e sadismo. Não tem linguagem chula. (não que eu tenha alguma coisa contra). E as cenas são criativas, descritas com muitos detalhes e muita classe.
Com certeza vou ler os próximos livros da Coleção Muito Prazer.

The plot was slow and contrived. The ending was horrible and anticlimactic. I would not recommend this to anyone lol. The whole s&m angle was dumb, and Mimi and Jake's relationship just seemed weird. I didn't understand their relationship and it was developed poorly. Her stalker was just a freak and it did not even make sense why he was crazy and why he latched on to her...probably one of the worst books I've read in a while smh. There were too many unnecessary parts/details in the book and it just seemed to drag endlessly.

Worst book I've read in a long time. If I hadn't already given up partway through on two other books already this year, I would have never stuck through this one. Both ridiculously raunchy and misogynistic, the book rambled through lame sex scenes for easily 15 pages at a time. I skimmed through trying to get to some semblance of a plot but it was slim. Then an odd stalker/murderer angle popped up, with an unlikely and unsatisfying resolution. I'm embarrassed to even donate this book!

This whole book is just "why?" Or "what was the point of that?". Nothing was explained. Things just . . .happened for no purpose or reasoning. And the ending? What was that? Why was that? Just brutal.

Eu nem sei o motivo de eu ter lido este livro. Provavelmente, foi na onda de 50 tons de cinza. Não gostei de nada na história, tudo forçado e personagens chatos.

It's unusual to come across prose that's simultaneously this tightly controlled and this full of energy. Jake & Mimi is an emotionally complex novel, deconstructing male domination fantasies without passing judgment until near the very end. The book is rich in insights into sexual psychology, portraying men who seek to control women because they do not feel in control of their own lives, as well as the women drawn to such men. A page-turner set in a world without safewords.

I think readers of both genders would find something to like here -- Jake is a man's man (frat boy, athlete, etc) and Mimi is planning her wedding. They're co-workers who share interesting extra-cirricular activities... (Wink, wink!)

I have not read 50 Shades of Grey, but hear it's a bawdy tale. I wonder if this quiet little Title is right up there with that lusty read! The characters of this book stay with you. The author weaves such life and events into the fabric of this story that the sex is not the only draw....WHY people, esp. Jake DO what they do, and WHO the strange stalker is creates a lovely intrigue!

This book started out sensual, then turned down-right sadistic. As a woman, it was very difficult at times for me to read this; envisioning what the character was enduring. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone.

Suspenseful but untimately unsatisfying as the protagonists (two people who are into S&M) get what the less tolerant might call "their just desserts". Took away the punch of the story for me.
