In 1958, Fidel Castro swept down from the mountains of Eastern Cuba and took control of the island nation. In the waning hours of the Cuban Revolution, great wealth was hastily hidden away by the rich before fleeing across the Florida Straits to freedom. Dire Straits is the story of a small group of exiles, who under the guise of the Mariel Boatlift attempt to retrieve a fortune in jewels twenty years after they were hidden inside the Communist stronghold. Motivated initially by the financial collapse of their South Florida boat-building business, they conceive a naive plan that proves doomed from the start, and throws them into one perilous situation after another. As the importance of finding the treasure is eclipsed by just trying to stay alive, they stumble upon a conspiracy to undermine the framework of American society, and they discover the dark secret behind the Boatlift, a secret that goes straight to the heart of the Cuban Government.
