A good book on leadership

It had a lot of good reminders on what a good leader look like and what they should do. You’ll find a few good nuggets of truth but nothing earth shattering. It’s a good book and worth the read. It reads quick as well.

As a seminary student trained to think in a postmodern education system, I did not like the legalistic title one bit. But I decided to give the book a chance and rate it for its content. The introduction was pretty good, but then I arrived at the real stuff. Just as I had expected, to base an entire book (or sermon) on why we should be like one of the bible characters is to miss the entire point of the grand narrative of the book or the bible as a whole. No decent bible scholar worth his salt would go on that tack, and true enough, Finzel supplied plenty of eisegetical material to last you for a long long time. Moses is definitely the main character of whatever book he appears in, and the application definitely is not that we should model ourselves after him.

Thought provoking

I really enjoyed the leadership lessons drawn from the life of Moses. The book is well written and humorous at times. I can put into practice what I learned reading it.

Straight forward read based upon the life of Moses. These ten principles are drawn from Moses life and example. They are not legalistic as some would suggest (probably their assumption based upon title), but insights gained from the author's study of Moses' life.

Hans Finzel in his new book, "The Top Ten Leadership Commandments" Book Two in the Top Ten series published by David C. Cook provides us with an essential guide to effective leadership.

From the back cover: And you thought your job was tough.
The life of Moses offers a master study in leadership. Called to do the impossible, Moses became an ambassador to kings and a leader of millions, while making a profound mark on history. His life was defined by purpose, service and vision. Simply put, it was a life that made a difference.
In this dynamic follow-up to "The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make", Dr. Hans Finzel presents the next chapter in his innovative series on leadership. "The Top Ten Leadership Commandments" explores the trials and triumphs of one of history's greatest leaders. Based on sound Biblical truths and extensive research, this essential guide to effective leadership shares ten foundational principles that can revolutionize your career, impact your business and change your life.
You are in a position of leadership or you will be in a position of leadership and you feel like a fish out of water. Fear not so did Moses. Remember he tried to talk God out of giving him the job before he even got started. It was an impossible job and Moses made mistakes but he fixed them and moved on. The important thing to realize is that he led, boy did he ever, an entire nation from slavery to the brink of The Promised Land. Now this is someone to emulate.

"The Top Ten Leadership Commandments" is a tool book. Dr. Finzel gives ten leadership commandments taken from a study of the life of Moses. 1) Thou Shalt Cling To The Vision, 2) Thou Shalt Not Serve Thine Own Ego, 3) Thou Shalt Practice Servant Leadership, 4) Thou Shalt Be Opposed, Resisted, And Misunderstood, 5) Thou Shalt Have A Life, 6) Thou Shalt Sweat The Small Stuff, 7) Thou Shalt Spend Time In The Tent, 8) Thou Shalt Lead To Leave, 9) Thou Shalt Never Give Up, 10) Thou Shalt Keep Thine Eyes On The Prize. You feel like you want to throw in the towel and walk away then you need to read this book. You feel as though you are stuck in your leadership abilities and not going anywhere then this book is for you. If you are in any type of leadership then you should read this book, put it on your shelf and come back to it every time you need too. Which may be often. Let's live our leadership abilities God's Way just like Moses did!

This was a free book from David C Cook. It was timely for my new assignment leading a discipleship ministry. I found helpful ideas for my role. For example: "Thou Shalt Cling to the Vision". I need to have that clear in my mind and heart, and keep it before me and before the people regularly.

Another example: "Thou Shalt Be Opposed, Resisted, and Misunderstood". I have experienced that before, but I think I'm in a much better place of maturity now to understand it and not have it sidetrack me.

I will refer to this book often as I go forward.

Another great one from Hans Finzel

Finzel takes examples from the life of Moses and combines them with his own experiences to set out ten keys to successful leadership.

I have found Finzel's books both very encouraging and at the same time discouraging because they help me identify so many shortcomings.

This was a free book. I'm glad it was. Some basic leadership principles but I did not think it was a good treatment of the complexities of the life and leadership of Moses, nor was it a good leadership book.

Hans does not really provide the reader with much new information to walk away with beside a few really good quotes. However, the principles in the book are good reminders.
