This book gives some appreciation for the adherence to method that Islamic scholars of Hadith have pursued in order to be sure that the received reports of the prophet Muhammad's deeds and actions can be relied upon. I'm not in a position to judge the robustness of the author's method, or the correctness of the translations, other than that he/the translator have included each reporter, have shown the lineage of reporting, and have shown the methodology for relying on reports and triangulating. The translations are clear, the commentaries and footnotes clearer still.

There is some wisdom in here. But if you are liberal, you will find yourself disappointed. The most obvious disappointments are the inequality between man and woman, the iniquitous practice of slave owning, and the marriage to a girl who was still in childhood. Second-order annoyances are the not quite "rules, rules, rules," but recommendations, recommendations, recommendations, even if they're intended to pave a path of moderation between extremes (such as between monasticism and decadence).
