The reading of this book was very timely as the issue of Immigration is currently among the most contentious. Former President Trump made it a key plank in his platform in 2016 and 2020. It appears to this reader that Trump sought to make the United States a WASP nation and would have, if possible, eliminated all immigration.
Through text and pictures, Time-Life has shown us the deep texture of the American portrait, not simply black and white, but encompassing all the colors of the rainbow. The cultures that have become part of the American landscape enrich us. Yes, there are problems, but to solve them by closing the borders would diminish this country and strike down her promise. This book addresses the issues, but also gives us a glimpse of immigrants who became American citizens. Some are famous, some are unknown but all have or wish to contribute to the high standard of living that has attracted millions to our shores.
